  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • Overall, I had a very positive experience with Moorehouse solicitors. The firm specialises in immigration law. It was my first exposure to the legal scenary and I very much enjoyed. It indeed played a crucial role in educating me on the transition from the classroom to the work place and it brought the law I had been learning to life in my eyes. I had worked in the past but this role helped confirm that the legal sector was for me. As well as the above, another factor about this experience that made it very memorable was, the solicitor in charge did not allow me to merely sit back and watch, he allowed to me to get actively involved in tasks. I lodged immigration appeals, interviewed clients and assisting the head solicitors with other tasks. Prior to this experience i would have never even looked at immigration law twice but this made it definetly appear interesting.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • My summer work experience involved assisting lawyers in research, lodging appeals and interviewing clients for immigration cases. Working with a firm that specialised in immigration law gave me a sense of the plight of immigrants in the UK, allowing my passion for advocating on behalf of immigrants to grow. As a result, my reasoning skills, ability to think laterally and my research skills were developed. The role also improved my ability to analyse and evaluate information to develop informed solutions.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I very much enjoyed my experience. For the days I worked there I honestly felt like a solicitor and a part of the team. They were all so incredibly kind and humble. The head solicitor was admirable and it was a joy to watch him at work, he was incredibly skilled and the clients loved and trusted him. Exposing myself to such a positive influence indeed, painted the legal sector in a very positive light in my eyes. He conversed with my regularly and directed me in the doing of the tasks he had assigned to me. This made me feel special. As well as that, though i was intially shy, their friendliness and positivity caused me to gradually open up.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • My work experience was quite informal as I had merely popped in and asked for the opportunity, despite this, the head solicitor managed to find something for mw to do every day. I was barely ever idle, he also made sure my breaks were scheduled at the right time and I had something to eat and drink. The solicitors always seemed to knoe what they were doing and I never got jn the way of that.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I learnt a lot about company culture and working at the firm. Merely by listening to the conversations they engaged in. Also, their clients seemed to have a lot of faith in them due to their positive reputation. They were mostly Nigerian which thus attracted particularly african clients. This made it a joy to listen in on their jokes and play along with their sense of humour as I myself am from a similar background. However, regardless of their backgorund, when it was worktime, they got the job done. I learnt a lot about their immigration law through the company and about law itself.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • It helped very much. As this was the first time I witnessed law in action, it helped to confirm my career choice. Networking with these helped to act as some sort of basis for what would later become an embarking into the legal sector. Although it might sounds cliche, as soon as a walked out of those doors after I had completedthe work experience, I knew the legal sector was for me.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • I was not paid or reimbursed as stated previously this work experience was quite informal and had been organised very quickly (in a day) by me walking into the firm and asking for the opportunity. Thus if one is looking for an informal opportunity in an immigration firm this willl be ideal. I live in london and not too far from the firm and thus this was not a problem for me.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • Yes there most defintely was, the very laid back atmosphere and the humility the firm carried made it very easy to converse and network other individuals who worked there. It was very easy to find what the lawyers did on a day to day basis by listening in on their conversations.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Moorehouse Solicitors to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Merely because for anyone who truly wants a quick insight into immigration law, this firm and its workings are perfectly suited to provide this insight. They were friendly and down to earth and encouraged me to do different tasks. This is why I can remember my experience. I actually partook in various tasks. This is what you want ask someone going in to do work experience. And this firm gives that.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Moorehouse Solicitors?
  • I would advise that you have some sort of interest in law, that you be aware that a transition is going to take place and at first the working world of a lawyer may seem very slow compared to what you are use to but in time you will get use to this. The more you get involved in different tasks the more you will get use to this new way of doing this. It will take time.. Do not give up!! Make sure you are punctual daily. Do not expect to walk in an immediately be handed exciting and breathtaking cases, just take what you are given and work with it.
