  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am based in Trading, my main responsibility is to spot trends and changes in the market which may affect sales for my resorts. From this I can then adjust the prices of the holidays or airfares accordingly. This can be to stimulate more sales, or to increase or margins and slow down sales. During my time on the Scheme I have traded many different short and mid haul resorts including: Mainland Spain, Greece, Canaries and Morocco. Internally we communicate with trading managers on what actions we have taken on our resorts and the reasons as to why we have done this and what we expect this to achieve. As well as this we often speak to purchasers, this can be to ask for support from the hoteliers when we are struggling to sell a hotel, or to ask for extra beds where we are nearly all sold out in a hotel. I have also taken on extra projects while working for Tui, one of these included working on creating a guide to help all the traders to price their airfares. These projects are a great chance to speak to people from across the business as well as pitch your idea to senior management.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Everyday you're learning and developing skills. From conference calls with purchasers out in resort to presenting to your teams and senior management in meetings. During the scheme I feel like I have developed so many core skills. Including communication, presentation skills, confidence, coaching skills and so many more! Not only this, Tui also offers other training such as insights, which is a personality test. It tells you all about yourself and can help you develop on possible weaknesses as well as points out what your strengths are.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed being on the scheme. All the teams in commercial are great to work with. They are all supportive and there to help you whenever you need them. I really enjoy my role, it's always varying and as you become more experience you become a trusted member of the team and you're ideas and decision are always respected by everyone. The scheme has also allowed me to get a great understanding of the business and what all the other departments. Its this part of the scheme that really set us out from my colleagues within my own department. By doing secondments and working in other areas you actually understand what their role is and this can help you and your team day to day. Overall I have really enjoyed the scheme and would definitely recommend it!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by TUI UK & Ireland?
  • The organisation sees you as any other member of staff, this allows you not to feel alienated by collegues or senior members off staff as everyone views you to be the same. On the other side, the scheme allows you to do extra roles and see sides of the business which other members of staff do not get to see. For example, we have been taken on tours around the Thomson Airways hanger, allowing us to see planes undergoing maintenance and what was involved in that side of the businesses.

As well as this, the business usually holds to events for the whole of the business, a Christmas Party and Summer Party.
