  • Advanced Apprentice - Junior Scientist Supporting the Senior Scientists with a range of laboratory duties including general administrative tasks and scientific research and testing of equipments. We have been given the opportunity to rotate around the different divisions.

  • scientific research report writing communicating effectively BTEC LEVEL 3 in applied science NVQ level 3 An ongoing soft skills development programme improving teamwork and interpersonal skills

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is a remarkable company within which i feel safe and happy to work in, People here form a community amongst themselves and will aim to better each other's performance by helping one another.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Physical Laboratory?
  • I feel like a member of the team. I feel quite valued as i have been awarded the BRONZE NPL AWARD and have been invited to Whitehall in recognition of girls sorking/ studying science and engineering. i have also been invited to WISE campaigns which promotes women in Science adn Engineering aiming to reduce inequality betrween women and men in the sector.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Since the APprenticeship is being re introduced after 20 years NPL have done exceptionally well in preparing both the apprentices and staff members for the programme - providing support to apprentices in form of outreach programes and immediate contact with heads.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We receive very good training from CSR with an input every Friday and a 24/7 homework help email help. The training providers genuinely want to see us succeed and work towards our maximum potential.

  • NPL provides internal training to help us better understand our work and to increase our awareness of the importance of health and safety at word.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It is enough for some my travelling as the train costs approximately 754 per month and we earn 650 per month its a little strenuous but not something which i can't mannage.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes, its easy building a network of contacts within the company and outside the company as NPL host various events and are invited to many like WISE campaigns and STEMNET subject conferences.

  • 9. Would you recommend National Physical Laboratory to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It has been an amazing experience for myself, and it would be incredibly selfish not to recommend such a programme. It helps build us as indiciduals more profficiently as we are exposed to both work experience and acadamic research and lessons.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Physical Laboratory?
  • Having an inquisitive mind is optimal for any applicant and a genuine interest in physics is a must. If given this opportunity apply as not many science establishment are likely to provide this amount of work experience!
