  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Junior lab scientist. Working in the lab gathering data and analysing the results in a spreadsheet. Reasearching different things to help with the work being done in the lab. Interacting with the people you are working with and other members of the team, occasionally interacting with other companies.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Currently working towards a level 3 Applied Science BTEC. I feel more confident in myself and feel better at communicating with people. We recieve a lot of internal courses as part of induction and training in addition to external courses supporting our time at NPL.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying the work I am currently doing. Everyone within the team is really nice and would not mind helping out when needed. It is a really nice environment to work in and I would consider it to be a better than my expectations as I wasn't entirely sure of what to expect.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Physical Laboratory?
  • I work as part of a team , working on different projects and tasks; therefore I feel valued within the team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It's well structured having different induction and training throughout the course. Every Friday we recieve academic input. Our tutors are incredibly friendly and supervisors check up on us every so often making sure everything is ok.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Our tutor comes in every Friday and is really nice. It makes the training enjoyable and if there id anything which we need extra help on we need just ask.

  • Everyone is really nice and friendly, you just have to ask if you need anything or have any problems.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary meets my costs, with most going into savings and some being used for social outings

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We get to help with outreach for future apprentice by visiting different colleges and careers fairs informing the public of the type of work done in a measurement institiute and promoting the apprenticeship.

  • 9. Would you recommend National Physical Laboratory to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because so far it has been a really enjoyable experience. There is also a lot more hands on experience then you get in the classroom.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Physical Laboratory?
  • Be yourself and truthful. And if you're looking for a more hands on experiance in science then it is definetly something to consider.
