  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The first week began with training in important skills necessary in a professional working environment such as communication and teamwork. The second week we were set different tasks and in randomly assorted groups for each one for us to use those skills to work together to create solutions for case studies that were set. The final week we were each assigned to a senior employee in various parts of the company, I worked in Financial Services Performance Improvement.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • We gained a level 1 qualification in team leadership and developed the skills for that over the weeks there and it culminated in receiving this. We learnt through different employees across EY, verbally and then put them in practice during the work experience to see how much we'd developed. This entrenched already existing skills as well as improving weaker ones.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme was enjoyable as it wasn't overly repetitive, we got an insight into the real world of financial services and met lots of polite and eager people who genuinely seemed to enjoy talking to us and answering questions. I didn't expect such a variety of activities that forced me and others to think creatively and be challenged the way we were, it was a good surprise.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • Everyone had a role to play in their tasks, and the organisers were encouraging and made us feel valued in their feedback was constructive. The points made showed us that they paid attention to the work we presented, gave us the positive which was satisfying and clear ways to improve that motivated us for the next task.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The work experience programme was structured flawlessly, I could plan ahead for each day as know generally what to expect. The clear organisation was appreciated as at no point did it seem like the organisers were unsure as to what to do and therefore they cared enough to plan in advance substantially.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Everyone was accessible and available for specific queries or general support, they listened to any problems and looked for solutions as best they could with care. They always made sure to check that we understood a task and how to proceed, and were patient enough to reiterate an explanation if need be.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • They catered and respected any needs be had, be it dietary or religious etc. They were always clear on how to contact any of them for any questions we had and made sure to reply in within an appropriate supply. I had problems with finalising my application and they were very helpful in communicating clearly what I could do to sort out the issue and thankfully it was solved.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For the type of work experience, it was, I believe that the salary was adequate. However, as we were paid in at the end the upfront travel and general costs had to be paid prior to receiving the actual pay for the programme. Though I understand why they pay us later, I think the travel costs were fairly substantial and could've been reimbursed.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • EY heavily gave us several opportunities for formal or informal, work-related or social events. They stressed the importance of the company culture of getting involved and the benefits of each opportunity we took so we were heavily encouraged. They still continue to message us about events so the opportunities remain and continue which is a big positive.

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • If you're interested in any financial services or even a professional working environment, you will learn so much and gain so much first-hand insight from your own experience as well as hear the stories of several others from such a variety of backgrounds and their opinions. You will come out far better prepared for the working world than you came in.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • You can do mock tests online that resemble the ones in the application, you can get practice and pick up the nuances of these tests. Also, for the interview research about the company as it is important to know where you are applying to work for and it shows that you cared enough to do so. When there, don't be afraid to try and take new opportunities and experiences as it is largely the purpose of being there.
