  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Stocking shelves, cashing up and setting up the till, I had to occationally interact with the stock takers and obviously answer any questions customers had. I had to report to my manager and supervisor regularly and as I was young they would check up on my a lot to see my tasks, if I had questions or if I was doing it right

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt many things such as how the shop floor was organised, how to place things on shelves nicely so customers where more inclined to purchase and also how to interact with customers in a friendly and appropriate way. The organisation and how to keep the cash in a safe way was also very helpful to my future work looking back

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I did enjoy it even if the hours where a little random so it was sometimes hard to keep a sleep schedule, the employees where I was where very helpful and always nice and encouraging. The tasks where not too hard but challenging even if I messed up on the till more than once.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Tesco?
  • As a whole in the big company I didn’t feel overly valued but I understood as I was not being paid and I was young and did make mistakes, Obviously they made me feel welcome and a part of the team as I would see the same people everyday and I would make friends

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program was not very structured, more I learnt things as I went on and then they gave me more advanced jobs as I went on. I did sometimes ask for more varied work as it was a little repetitive- I mean its tescos but I saw more exciting jobs others where doing that I thought I would be good at

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received a lot of support when he was around, otherwise other employees would help me or I would ask another supervisor or whoever was incharge that day. I got basic training which was very helpful but as I was never left alone for very long there where always people around

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I did not hear much from ‘tescos’ during my time there. I mainly communicated with my on site manager with any official stuff like that. They did contact me before and after the placement as they communicate with everyone after they do a role there. That was for a similar survey like this

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As it was an placement from a friend I did not receive any payment but I could easily walk to the location so did not need any travel support. I got the standard Tesco employee discount which helped for lunches and buying food outside work which was really nice and my family enjoyed a lot!

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are not many opportunities outside the store unless you wanted to transfer to another store.

    6/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There was good organisation- something which I have not had in all my other places of work and there is the basic training you need and you are always told what to do so there is little space for mistakes as long as you understand. The discounts are good and the large amount of stock keeps it interesting!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • Just be professional and polite during the interview, it would depend on where you are applying but many will take you on if you are working for free and them that can usually lead to a job there. The interview process was simple for me even if it was stressful (like all interviews) but looking back it was one of the easiest I have done!
