  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In the mornings, during my placement, I was given a variety of presentations on the firm and areas of law such as commercial litigation. A number of these presentations were very engaging, especially the business exercise, where in teams we advised on a business scenario. In the afternoons, I was given a variety of tasks throughout the week as I got to work in three practice areas: corporate, pensions, and financial funds and regulations. While working in these areas with my supervisors, I completed research tasks, helped draft and proofread documents, and got to sit in on a client call.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I was able to develop my ability to quickly summarise and comprehend information as a result of carrying out several research tasks. I also learned how to draft legal documents like a power of attorney, which was challenging but fascinating.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed the work I got to do because it allowed me to get properly involved at the firm. On occasion, there could have been a bit more to do, but that gave me an opportunity to engage with some of the really friendly staff working there. My supervisors were also so helpful and made me feel included in their teams, while making sure I had interesting tasks to work on.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Pinsent Masons?
  • I felt very valued because they actually gave me tasks and activities that were important and kept me busy, so I didn't feel like an odd part. My supervisors also gave me really constructive and positive feedback at the end of the week, which made me feel like my contributions and help had been appreciated.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was fairly well organised because it allowed me to get a cohesive view of the firm by letting me try and hear about multiple practice areas. I would have liked to have got a feel for more practice areas, but considering the programme was only a week long, I was impressed by how much they managed to fit in.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I felt very well supported during my work experience as I could easily consult my supervisor if I had any difficulties with tasks or any questions. My supervisors also made sure I was introduced to their teams so I could be comfortable approaching them too.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Pinsent Masons were very welcoming and gave me a really useful information pack when I arrived. Everyone I met was very nice so it was very clear that I could get support if I needed it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Considering it was unpaid work experience and only for a week I wasn't really expecting anything. Also it wasn't overly hard for me to get to so I didn't mind that. Although, I got a voucher for lunch on the first day, which was nice of them to do.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I was made very aware while I was there about the good work-life balance at the firm because solicitors who spoke to me seemed very pleased by the social events and activities the firm promotes. I got to participate in the firm's dress down days and try some cake, which was for charity and was very enjoyable.

  • 9. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it is the kind of firm that others would enjoy working at because it is so friendly and supportive.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • I'd advise them to focus on being individual and not too cliche when applying. Don't just list things you've done, actually elaborate on them because you are more likely to be successful. Also I'd suggest really getting stuck in with what they give you to do because you can learn a lot about areas of law that you might not be familiar with and it'll be appreciated.
