  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Work experience student - typical day included attending workshops in the morning then meeting supervisors and going back to department for rest of day. While in department, daily tasks included reading and comparing documents, research projects, mock tribunal and attending meetings with clients. Changed departments twice so got to do different work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In terms of personal skills, I have improved my confidence and communication. I have also developed time management skills through prioritizing the tasks that were given to me and completing them before deadlines. In addition, I have learned office skills such as how to put together presentations, draft letters and scan documents to create certified copies.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed it a lot - it was very insightful. The team are very friendly and happy to help even though they're busy people. The program exceeded my expectations as I didn't think I would have the chance to do client work and meet different people in the firm in different departments.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Pinsent Masons?
  • I have felt like a valued member of the team even though I was only there for a week - people ask you to do tasks for them that genuinely matter and give you feedback on the work you do. If there are any aspects that you don't understand then the supervisors are happy to take time to explain it.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I thought it was fairly well structured but some activities didn't take as much time as they were allotted so in theory more activities could have been fitted into the day. But overall it was a good balance of department work and presentations and workshops. Apart from the first day it as clear that start time was 9:30 and finish at 5:30 with lunch from 1 until 2.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received as much support as I needed - when I didn't understand things they were happy to help and explain things, even though they had lots of work to be doing themselves. I never felt lost or like I didn't have enough to do. Training was good - had IT training and acceptable usage training.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The HR team supported us at the start and then later we were supported by our supervisors. Support all round was good and we were never made to feel like a burden or inconvenience if we needed to ask for help. Whenever a problem or issue arose, it was

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • This question is not relevant to me as I am only k experience student. This means that I don't earn a salary. However , the salaries here seem to be generous but proportional to the work that the fee earners do - they work very hard but are rewarded for it.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes there are lots of opportunities I've been told about although as I am only here for a week I haven't participated. There are client events where you might go for dinner or drinks, there are netball teams, tag rugby teams and social events for the colleagues to get involved with if they wish to.

  • 9. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend because I think that it has been a really valuable experience that has given me lots of insight into the legal career. Because it is specifically designed work experience, they have tasks ready for you (unlike some others where there isn't much you can get involved in).

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • Make sure to show commercial awareness in your application - e.g jobs you've had and things that would help you in a commercial environment.
