  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an Apprentice Broadcast Engineer, the scheme involves a mix of university study and work placements, split into 3-month blocks. Work can vary greatly from supporting and shadowing technical engineers, assisting with outside broadcasts, to repairing equipment and working and transmitter sites.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The work placements at the BBC and industry partners give first-hand experience of broadcast technology areas. This is reinforced by the university study, with modules related to AV technology, computer networking, and many other areas.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Every day is different and there's always something new to learn; the huge range of opportunities available and the supportive work environment make the scheme very enjoyable and always interesting.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • Everyone is made to feel an important part of the BBC, and the work environment is very supportive and friendly.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is divided into study and placements, giving a good mix. An initial induction period helped to give a good grounding of the BBC, the programme, and the wider industry.

  • The universities offer additional support with areas such as maths skills, as well as tutors offering support by e-mail when we are away on placement periods.

  • There are always points of contact for any issues, and the scheme managers are very supportive.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is enough to cover living costs and accommodation, and costs are met for business travel. However, the salary may be more of a stretch for those working and living in London.

  • There are many events and activities on offer at the BBC, ranging from social occasions to opportunities to enhance and progress your career and experience.

  • Yes

  • Working at the BBC gives the opportunity to work in a very supportive, collaborative and friendly environment, where there are countless opportunities to develop and progress yourself while having fun at the same time.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Be sure to give examples of your skills and experience, as well as demonstrating a genuine interest in the BBC's work and output. Previous industry experience isn't usually necessary; show that you have the potential and enthusiasm to learn and progress.
