As an Apprentice Broadcast Engineer, the scheme involves a mix of university study and work placements, split into 3-month blocks. Work can vary greatly from supporting and shadowing technical engineers, assisting with outside broadcasts, to repairing equipment and working and transmitter sites.
The work placements at the BBC and industry partners give first-hand experience of broadcast technology areas. This is reinforced by the university study, with modules related to AV technology, computer networking, and many other areas.
Every day is different and there's always something new to learn; the huge range of opportunities available and the supportive work environment make the scheme very enjoyable and always interesting.
Everyone is made to feel an important part of the BBC, and the work environment is very supportive and friendly.
The programme is divided into study and placements, giving a good mix. An initial induction period helped to give a good grounding of the BBC, the programme, and the wider industry.
The universities offer additional support with areas such as maths skills, as well as tutors offering support by e-mail when we are away on placement periods.
There are always points of contact for any issues, and the scheme managers are very supportive.
The salary is enough to cover living costs and accommodation, and costs are met for business travel. However, the salary may be more of a stretch for those working and living in London.
There are many events and activities on offer at the BBC, ranging from social occasions to opportunities to enhance and progress your career and experience.
