  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I attended a traineeship over the 6 weeks holiday in August 2016, then I was placed in Good Shepherd Catholic Primary school for a year while I completed my level 3 in ICT Infrastructure. for a Year. My job title was Primary Goal teachers apprentice I was on site 5 days a week all year round, the training was done remotely via skype with my tutor where I was released from my job role to study. My job role included - Maintaining the ICT equipment on a day to day basis - Tracking the delivery of the computing curriculum - planning for and delivering Computing lessons, with the class teacher - Assessing the schools needs for ICT, suggesting improvements they could make that would improve their workflow etc. - Leading on E-safety in school - Delivering CPD sessions to staff - Running lunch time and after school clubs

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I gained a level 3 infrastructure technician qualification. Personally, I developed my interpersonal skills from working with a wide range of people on a daily basis. (Teachers, support staff, children, parents and external agencies) It has helped to develop my technical skills too

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed my placement, so much in fact that it made me reconsider a change in career. From ICT to teaching, due to the positive interactions and experiences on this apprenticeship.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School?
  • I felt very valued by the school that I was placed in, I received written feedback from members of staff from all job families with regards to my performance. I also received lots of verbal feedback from Primary Goal and written (through assessment feedback) I do feel at times I was left alone for too long (as the apprenticeship went on)

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Considering Primary Goal is still in its very early stages, it is clearly structured and organised by module/exam. Their bespoke online portal and helpdesk is a big help for supporting the apprenticeship.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training provider "Primary Goal" has been very helpful at every stage of the apprenticeship, with extra support for things like exams and access to a tutor at any time via email who is always ready to help.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The school have been brilliant at supporting me through the programme. They have provided plenty of opportunities for me to grow and develop in the classroom through lots of feedback and encouragement.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary was the apprentice minimum wage, as I live at home this was not a problem, but for others who may have other living situations, this may be different.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of my standard work, I have taken part in a range of different events in the wider school community, including things like being a DJ at the school Disco, helping out at the school fete and the school Christmas bazar, teaching parents about e-safety at parents evenings etc.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Schools are a brilliant place to work, this apprenticeship is very supportive in both a pastoral personal development sense, and in a technical skills-based development sense.I would recommend it to anybody looking for an apprenticeship.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School?
  • Your video chat based interview is very important, treat it as if it was a face to face interview. Be sure to be logged in early so your not late, and dress smartly.
