  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Deloitte tax analyst in the real estate team which involves working with big real estate clients to help them save tax when buying property within the UK or across the world. Helping out on structuring reports to enable them to decide whether or not to acquire a property and if so, where to hold their asset. As an analyst, I tend to work with senior members of the tax team, attend client and non-client meetings with partners and take part in regular training to expand on my technical tax knowledge. I also study for the ACA qualification alongside my day to day job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Studying for the ACA qualifications involves 16 exams throughout my four years as a school leaver but these must be taken whilst carrying out my day job at deloitte. Doing this, we learn time management with our work life and personal life. Added stress motivates us as school leavers to ensure we are always passing our exams. Deloitte carries out regular training around once a week which helps us improve our knowledge on the job but also provides external training courses annually.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The tax team which I am a part of is a group of 100 individuals of all grades. This allows a junior analyst to work with members of the teams at all different grades from manager to partner level. Different experience is gained from working with different members within a team. The company as a whole is supportive of the school leavers programme and ensures we are on track with exams and work. Coaches also provide full support to ensure school leavers are happy with the programme and if not, are helpful in implementing change.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised for a work perspective as we were put into teams from the day we joined and have the flexibility to now move into other teams should we wish to. However, from an exams perspective, considering Deloitte takes on thousands of new graduates every year and the school leaver programme is only just growing, school leaver systems requires more support and staff to organise college dates and tuition providers.

This can be during college hours, on evenings and even weekends. Tutors aim to respond to student questions very quickly to ensure they are getting all the help they need and pass rates are extremely high!

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary package of £30,000 is a competitive salary for analysts in London at firms. I am grateful to be earning more than the average 21 year old without a degree. Deloitte understand that a school leaver is just as valued as a graduate and therefore our salary package is no higher or lower than other analysts in the firm, regardless of degree qualifications. Employee benefits are great at Deloitte with £600 to spend across the year on health benefits, extra time off or company cars.
