  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a tax advisor in the Tax Controversy and Risk Management team. I undertake calculations and write reports, working on engagements relating to Employee Benefit Trusts, Corporate Criminal Offence and HMRC enquiries. My role requires a good knowledge of corporate and personal taxes and I work closely with a number of different members of the team as well as across different teams.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a number of new skills and improved many existing skills. I have significantly improved my skills working with Excel as well as improved my skills regarding teamwork and delegation as my role ensures that I undertake a review based role on many occasions. I have also improved my skills around presenting as I have to present to clients and lead on some areas of meetings and calls.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The team that I work with is a great team and I get on well with all members of the team. The work that I undertake is interesting and has been getting more interesting with time. The programme was quite unorganised with a number of events being scheduled at last minute and no one knew much information about what was planned. I enjoyed meeting other people on the scheme and felt that they helped me succeed.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • I feel very appreciated by the senior staff in my team and receive good quality and timely feedback from the majority of them. I have received a number of impact awards for good performance which I feel has incentivised me to work hard. I do not feel quite so valued by the firm as a whole.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was not very well organised and at times felt very unfair. There were occasions where people were told that there would be no early promotions only for others to be promoted early.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A lot of support from Kaplan, I felt they were very good and I enjoyed learning there.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Not a lot of support. No real study leave for exams was not great and it meant people had to use their annual leave to pass exams. I felt my team were very understanding and supportive however.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • During the school leaver programme I felt the salary was low in comparison to graduates with less experience. However since completing the programme I feel the salary meets my costs well.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • As I do not live very near to the office I do not get the chance to undertake many opportunities however I feel that there are lots to choose from.

  • Yes

  • It is generally a good place to work and I have enjoyed my time here.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • The application process is difficult but a very valuable and fun experience at the assessment days.
