  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My Apprenticeship is a Broadcast Operator. It means that I will be able to operate equipment which is used for the BBC when broadcasting or recording. By the end of the Apprenticeship I will be expected to work on different equipment with TV, Radio and other technology. The first part of my Apprenticeship takes place at my local BBC building where I am on Placement. This is where I learn on the job and contribute to different BBC content. The Second and third parts are with the other Apprentices in my year. To learn the theory side of the course we meet in Newcastle to go to college. The third part is a training at a BBC studio where we can freely try jobs we are less confident in.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have gained several IT skills while being on this course on the theory side. Most of the theory side has been based on Microsoft Operated devices and appliances. I have also been able to use and understand different broadcast equipment. This has varied from the medium such as sound in radio or TV as well as Vision. Another variety is the place and what is appropriate. Mainly with a studio in contrast to an outside broadcast.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot. I have support from everyone in the workplace. Both from my line managers and from other employees. Plus the variety of content which the BBC creates means that there is something for every culture in Britain. The BBC meets its goals on respecting each other and working together. I do find the tasks outside of BBC rather dull however.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • I feel completely integrated into the BBC. The other people at my workplace are able to take some time out of their day to explain what they are doing. My supervisors while on placement have experience and explain or demonstrate equipment really well. Plus when I am able to do a task with confidence the staff allow me to complete it as an individual. Plus my managers are welcoming at any point of the day.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme for the majority of the time is solid. Being a communication company the BBC is good at keeping the Apprentices up to date. The training we have received during placement or the initial few weeks has been logged for future reference by the company. Training during my time in the theory part of my programme started off terrible. But due to my managers putting pressure on the college it has improved.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive training in several ways at the BBC. There are mandatory Online courses which every BBC person has to learn. The BBC has also given me online learning access to help me study for my theory. My managers are always available to receive an ask for aid. I am always learning even when I am not confident because of the support I receive from the BBC.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am always kept up to date on what is going on in the company at large. Every other day I will receive an email which is company wide outlining the goals of the BBC in the near future. The IT department are kind and to the point when you have an issue. In terms of my line managers they will always meet me in person when they are in the same building.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For my location the recent pay rise has helped tremendously. I am living in OK conditions. My bills including Rent and utilities are just over half my monthly earnings. I have found a flat which allows me to walk to work. Daily costs and social costs vary for me as my friends and family outside of work live in different parts of the country. Travel costs are taken care of by the BBC when I go away for work. In short I can live barely on my wage.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • As a part of the BBC I have access to several opportunities. I am a part of the Royal Television society an can have training across the country. I am also able to help out with several charity events such as Sports relief or Children in Need each year. I am also able to get discounts for local leisure activities and centres. This includes Gyms and Cinemas as well as restaurants.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because the BBC has opportunities for different people from all walks of life. It does not matter if you are more creative, you can create new show ideas and be a part of production. If you are more factual you an be a part of non-fiction or quiz show productions. If you specialise in a particular part of technology you can join a crew of a show or join R&D. That is not to mention journalists with a variety of specialities. I know I am missing out departments I have not even seen yet.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • The BBC is a place to be comfortable but professional. Follow its Values which are: Trust; Audiences; Quality; Creativity; Respect and Work Together. Take time for the Application process. Also be very careful about your Social Media and what you have published on the internet.
