  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Chamical anayst at Thames water, no different to any other member of staff. I had half a day a week to help complete uni work. I was working in the general chemistry department consucting several different water analyses.

  • Yes, manual handling qualifications, gas safety training, opportunity to do RSciTech and RSci.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Quite demanding and very challenging at times balancing work and study.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Thames Water?
  • I felt very valued at the beginning of the course, I did/do get recognition from peers and management that i did well in my apprenticship. However the lab apprenticeships do not get the same treatment that the rest of the apprenticeships in the business do. We dont take part in any events that are arranged within the company for apprentice's

  • The structure of the course my predecessor and I did was still being tweaked and could have been alot better with workload delivery

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • MMU provided support (manchester metropolitan university)

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Thames water management provided good support. Though there are no gidelines for what support thames water can give as far as study leave. My predesessor and I received no study leave and it had to come out of our annual leave. Any exams or days spent at the university for lab 'residential' weeks (once a year) were 'training' days.

  • Fairly good pay for an apprenticeship

  • Yes, but difficult to attend company days as a lab because of our work.

  • I enjoy my job and management are supportive

  • Be passionate and thet them see that you are, if this a career you want
