  • Trainee Broadcast Engineer 22 Month Masters degree course with four 3 month long placements and a 6 month project placement. Day to day tasks range depending on which department you are placed in but obviously revolve around engineering. Typical tasks could be providing technology support, producing technical documentation, writing code or managing your own projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • MSc in Broadcast Engineering along with a long list of internal training courses. Covering project management, health and safety, audio and video engineering, programming, satellite communication, studio operations, Amazon Web Services.... Lots of opportunity to shape the course to fit your interests. This course has allowed me to choose my placements based on my interests and now I have a job in the department I wanted to work in from the start.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have loved my course, my 10 peers have become fantastic friends as we share similar interests. Company culture is amazing and avoids the corporate overly competitive environment. Everyone has been so friendly and willing to share their knowledge. The course met my expectations. I previously completed the Broadcast Engineering Apprenticeship with the BBC so I knew what I was getting into, and i have no regrets.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • I feel very valued by the BBC. I have been given real responsibility by the departments I've worked in and have always been given a good amount of praise from managers and the people I work with. We are invited to exciting opportunities all the time. Along with that, we are given one on one time with managers and a graduation ceremony at the end of the course.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised. Feedback from previous cohorts have shaped how the program runs and so we are always well informed and up to date with whats happening on the course.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • University and course leaders provide lots of support. University learning is provided in week long blocks and so we can spend lots of time away from lecturers. However, they have always responded to emails quickly and provided the required level of detail. BCU have embraced the block learning methodology of this course and have supported it well.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Managers are very approachable and always willing to just talk through problems and issues. I have recently had to decide between two job opportunities and both my manager and course leader set time aside to help me to decide. Supervisors whilst on placement have also been fantastic and willing to take time out of their day to help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary adequately provides money for living costs. It may not be the highest paying scheme but it also provides an amazing work life balance along with a Masters Degree. We are not expected to be the first one in and last one out the office just to make a good impression, we aren't micro managed and watched over whenever we're in work. When we are working away from out home base our travel and meal expenses are covered.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are always opportunities to volunteer and socialise after work either with colleagues or at work events. These include all the huge festivals the BBC goes too and smaller events based in the BBC offices.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Great work life balance, excellent career opportunities, treated with respect and interesting work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Have a passion for the Job you're applying for. The BBC looks for real interest in the subject and a willingness to put the effort in over just having work experience.
