  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Job title - Assistant audit manager. This role is obtained after 3/4 years in the apprenticeship. Daily tasks include overseeing client engagements. Daily interactions are with team members both Junior and senior and also the client. Interactions can be in person and via email. Responsibilities include planning engagements, overseeing junior testing. Day to day I can be office based or out at a client site.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Whilst working at Deloitte I have obtained by ACA qualification from the ICAEW. As part of the keeping up membership we also have to perform continued professional development which is through internal courses online and attending internal training courses. I have improved by interpersonal skills through regular communication with clients and have also improved business writing skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The day to day work can be very varied due to different clients that you can be working on. The team is very friendly and supportive. When you join, a number of other school leavers and graduates also start with you which means that you have a team of people that you can turn to for help. The job role is how I expected it to be and I have enjoyed the process.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Deloitte?
  • Deloitte has a formal appraisal system which enables regular communication with managers about progress. There are also schemes in place for internal recognition where you can nominate team members for awards and vouchers. The culture encourages each team member to put themselves forward for areas of interest whether this is the type of client you work with or the nature of the engagement. I have felt valued through my apprenticeship.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction process is structured as there are several hundred people who also join the scheme at the same time. Training is provided regularly. There is a support network set up both locally in your office and nationally through the brightstart programme. Studying is structured mainly by the college that you attend and is dependent on the sittings of exams. There is an exam manager for any questions about exams.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The tutor from college is the main contact for exam concerns. The tutor can be access by email both inside and outside of work hours. There is also guidance available online such as tutorials. The general atmosphere is very supportive which makes the overall process more enjoyable. Internally there is the office exam manager and also your peers to support you.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Managers carry out regular check ins about your progress with both clients and training. The HR team can be contacted for any specific matters. When joining you can be assigned a mentor which can be available for more informal questions. There are regular firm wide communications about frequently asked questions. There is a positive attitude towards helping.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary package is good compared to the local area. Salaries are revised according to promotions. Travel costs to clients are reimbursed dependent on the firm policy. The location of the office is easily accessible. Living costs are dependent on where you live. I live further out of the office and therefore living costs are lower whilst travel costs/time are higher.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company frequently arranges events for both the staff and clients. There are also many voluntary and charitable events set up which is headed by the charity committee. Sports clubs are also arranged by the office such as netball, football and cricket. All staff members are welcome to join. The location of the office means that social events can be easily accessed in the local area.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • Read all available material on the internet site. There is a lot of guidance about what the application process involves. Try to attend recruitment events to speak to someone local to the office. The onboarding process is often carried out by the central HR team and therefore a local contact will help with any specific questions.
