  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Chemical analysis in the lab requires daily tasks such as processing the instrument, making solutions, creating and pouring sample batches. You are responsible for the method(s) and instrument(s) you run, which allows you to run what samples need prioritzing that day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My existing skills such as IT, teamworking, communication and organisation have improved while on the apprenticeship. I've also started working towards competent analyst status to allow further progression within my role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been very enjoyable so far. The atmosphere in the lab is relaxed and doesm't make me feel unwelcome or pressured. The team I work in has been incredibly inclusive and has made me feel like a part of it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Thames Water?
  • I feel like thames water does value its apprentices. I get praise from my manager when I do somethinhg especially well, or notice something troubling and raise it. My team value me just as much as any other anaylst in the team, which makes me feel very welcome.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship is well structured and well organised from thames water's side of things. The induction thaught me everything I needed to know about the lab itself and learn more about the department I would be joining, there was plenty of training and support to help enter my role within the lab. There were always weekly support and mentoring sessions available to me whenever I felt like I needed to talk about how things were going.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received lots of support from my trainer in the lab during the first few weeks of the apprenticeship, and they are always happy to help with any queries I may have about my job.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is always available to help with anythning I need. HR is easy to contact and are quick to respond, my mentor and manager are always happy to help with any problems or questions I may have.

  • My salary package easily meets my current costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are occasional activities organised within the team. Small group things such as paintball are offered when someone has time to organise it, but there's always to opportunity to try and get something together for a team outing.

  • 9. Would you recommend Thames Water to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a great company to work for, very accommodating, very well organised with apprenticeships and general day to day jobs. There's never nothing to do and everyone keeps eachother busy during the day.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thames Water?
  • In regards to the application process, make yourself stand out as a viable candidate, ask questions and be interested in the job. Be active with the application process and your email contact. Any questions you have about the process will be answered by the assessment day, which is a very simple day consisting of a tour and a couple of group tasks to show your problem solving and teamworking skills.
