  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In the first two weeks of the work experience we took part in activities and interactive workshops to develop our skills of problem solving, team work, communication and presentation skills. We applied our skills to case studies in order to understand the genuine issues businesses may face on a day to day basis. In the third week, we were assigned different service lines, where we had the opportunity to experience the lives of an EY employee.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the three weeks of work experience, I had the opportunity to develop many skills. These skills included problem solving, effective networking, presentation skills, team leading, effective communication and building positive relationships. The development of these skills was highly beneficial as they are an integral part of life in a workplace.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed the programme as the work throughout the three weeks was varied, which meant that there wasn't an instance where I felt bored. Additionally, I had the chance to get to know people better and even make friends. During the programme there was the opportunity to get to know all of my peers.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • I feel valued by EY as during the course of the work experience, we were regularly given feedback and guidance on our progress. We were praised and encouraged during tasks and given constructive criticism in order to help us improve on the next task. Each of us were involved and encouraged to participate in all of the activities and so everyone felt valued by EY.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It was a well organised programme as there was an induction where we were provided with information regarding the programme. Furthermore, there were different things planned for different days of the programme, with external visits and speakers well integrated into the three weeks. For 10 months after the programme, we were each assigned a mentor, whom we met on a monthly basis. I would say the work experience was very well organised.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As this was work experience there was not a training provider as such however this opportunity was made aware to me through the advertisement in my college, who encouraged the application of students to this programme. In addition to this, they were available if any guidance was needed during the application process.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As mentioned previously, we had mentors from EY whom we met up with on a monthly basis; this showed a true sense of commitment and support from EY to each of the participants. During the programme, there were designated individuals who we knew we could go to for help, support or guidance if it was ever needed.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary was excellent as it factored in travel costs, daily costs and any social costs. This was necessary as some individuals on the programme had to take various modes of transport such as the train to get here due to the location of the programme. I think EY met the costs of individuals well as they also provided us with lunch every day.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We are sent invitations to EY events such as those for the alumni of the Smart Futures Programme. Including this we are sent networking opportunities, which can help us develop our networking and social skills. EY shows great consideration in the opportunities they provide us with and it is evident in the organisation of these activities, as they take into account our schedules outside of work experience.

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It has been a great opportunity to develop both my academic and interpersonal skills. It has also been an opportunity to see what life is really like in the workplace and immerse myself in it, in order to make an informed decision on whether a job in this area is for me.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • The application process involves a written application form, for an initial assessment, before a telephone interview. The telephone interview assessment allows the interviewers to understand whether you are right for the programme. It is important to be yourself during the interview and use your previous experiences to back up any of your points.
