I am a trainee underwriter in Hiscox London Market. This involves rating risks, knowing wording and networking with brokers.
On my first year I started as a level 3 apprentice and then moved onto level 6. I have completed my Cert CII and working towards my Dip CII. I have been on courses and have had a lot of training for my role.
I'm part of a big developing team and get involved a lot which is enjoyable. The job also carries a lot of responsibility so I enjoy that too.
I feel very valued here in terms of my immediate team and line manager.
The first year as a level 3 was very unstructured and there was little consistency from the external trainers. This year is more structured as the external trainers have found their feet a bit. We are also more normal employees but do apprenticeship work on the side rather than being an apprentice.
This year, I feel I have support where I need it and if necessary but obviously I don't need as much support as a first year apprentice.
Hiscox are very supportive of the apprenticeship scheme and there are various "champions" around the business.
Pay is good
Lots of social committees, charity events, broker events, team events.
Yes
I've enjoyed it
Hiscox is a good company to work for and they value their apprentices. You are considered an employee like any one else rather than just an apprentice which means you have just as much responsibility.
