  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a customer facing, Customer and Line Apparatus-One Man Installation (CALOMI) engineer working for Openreach. This involves providing, installing, faulting and repairing all manner of telephone and broadband equipment and issues in the telephone network

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. Although I have been involved with repair and maintenance of electronic equipment since childhood, the work I now do on the telephone network has widened my experience and has provided me with significant opportunities. I have been formally trained in telecommunications engineering and my 'on the job' activities provide a wide range of situations where I can apply faulting techniques to repair problems

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have attended, and completed, a formal programme leading to successful completion of a Level 2 NVQ in Communications and Information Technology. This, in conjunction with the real life issues involved on a day to day basis when carrying out work on the telephone network has been extremely s.atisfying and enjoyable

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • I am rewarded for my work by salary, career opportunities, support, equipment and timely advice. There is a strong team ethos present which allows for the provision of all manner of information.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The company is extremely large and employs thousands of people around the world. Consequently, there is an extremely structured programme in place for the training and production of suitably qualified engineers.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support available is extremely impressive. The training programme assigned me to a specific tutor whom was always contactable and very supportive. Any issues which arose could be addressed extremely promptly.

  • As mentioned above, the employer is extremely supportive in terms of training, coaching and the provision of advice, knowledge and information.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • At the moment, I am on a Trainee salary which is commendable and competitive given that I was new to the telecommunications industry. upon satisfactory completion of my training I will be receiving a pay rise and will be eligible for further training which may also result in further pay increases.

  • I understand that the company provides significant opportunities in a large number of areas

  • Yes

  • As there is a wide range of opportunities available for people who are willing to apply themselves to this type of work.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Always be open to new experiences and do not be afraid to ask any questions, however daft.
