  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • At the moment I am a Trainee Technician. So my day-to-day tasks involve Engineers from the Infrastructure team giving me tasks to do such as creating drawings or editing model files, my tasks vary a lot. I also work on a large variety of projects. When I am tasked with doing something on a project I will always be in close contact with the Engineers on that project so if I need any help I can simply ask them. I am given a fair amount of responsibility, such as for example creating drawings that are going to be sent out t the client. I do not really have much contact with the clients as that is more left to the Project Managers, however I have been asked to phone and email companies regarding products they produce.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really do enjoy my program and work. I love doing the work I do because I am always learning about something new and something I am interested about. I sometimes find the work challenging but I embrace that because I like to be pushed to work hard. I feel comfortable with the team and am not afraid to ask questions. The program on a whole is better than I expected it to be and I am really enjoying it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Arup?
  • I do feel very much valued by Arup, I feel like I am an equal part of the team. I have a lot of contact with my Managers so I know how they feel about how I have been getting on with my apprenticeship which gives me confidence to go on and do better. I also know I am valued by Arup as if there is ever concerns and I speak about them to my manager they then will be heard and acted upon. Senior staff always try to get me involved in whichever projects which furthermore shows how i am valued.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Arup have a great system to get you settled in to the work place. With a strong guidance from your mentor and buddy to help you get used to everything. I also travelled to Manchester to take part in a Apprentice Induction where Apprentices from all over the Great Britain offices attend. This is a real ice-breaker to help you get comfortable with Arup and all your other Apprentices. You will make friends that you will later go on to no doubt work with, I still speak to a lot of the Apprentices i met when i was there. This really is a great experience. Also when you begin work at Arup you are told where to find training, studying and all the resources you could possibly need. Task delegation and hierarchy is all done by the senior engineers or project managers on the project, so i will be given tasks by certain engineers on the project. Arup also schedule often meetings with college and with myself and team members i have been working with to see how i am performing. Overall everything i could possibly need is there for me in place and i have been made aware of where it is, the structure of the program is excellent.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary is very healthy and meets my costs easily with a lot of flexibility. Living costs, travel costs, daily costs, social costs and the location of where i work are not a problem at all for the salary i am on.
