substation engineer Review

The training is split between on-site experience, university and training and Eakring training centre. Most days consist of studying in the evenings for various exams with both national grid and university. During the day we undertake group training and often do practical assessments and group work.On site is trying to learn and get involved on jobs and producing write up's. This is done by shadowing fitters and getting hands on with equipment.

Studying towards a foundation degree in power engineering, this is very demanding but relevant to the job and helps build a base of knowledge for site work. The practical and safety training is extensive, from working in confined spaces to low voltage wiring to transformer design.

The team atmosphere is very supportive as are the company. The team are all exceptional individuals who have a lot to offer and everyone gets along very well. This course has been very enjoyable as well as challenging.

They put a lot of money and effort into training you, on the higher apprentice scheme you are given high expectations but the support is very much there. We're also given a company car, our food is paid for and we each have mentors and regular reviews.

It is a well organised program, there could be some changes to spread the workload more over the year but overall it manages to accomplish a lot in a short space of time.

Travel costs, hotels and food costs away from home are covered, as well as company cars being provided. This program starts on a decent salary and continually increases it. In this aspect it outperforms any other apprenticeship I've seen.

Great company to work for, great future prospects and they invest heavily in their staff. Most of the higher up engineers and management started as apprentices.

Prepare some knowledge about equipment in substations and research the roles of a senior authorised person. Relate your experience to working well within a team as this is important to national grid.
