  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a network engineer and my job title here at virgin media is an activate provisioning engineer. The core parts of my role are to build and implement the logical infrastructure of a business network. With the help of our colleagues in the field we provide an end to end solution, this is dependent on their specific requirements. I responsible to make sure that the logical side is working by doing all the required tests, upon completion I would close the job down and this will result in billing taking over.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the job greatly due to the people that I work with, we have very family like atmosphere with in our team. I know that if there are any issue I do not have to worry about them as my colleagues will help me every step of the way. Like all places the company has its up and downs however in general it is great place to work. I truly believe that virgin Media has more to offer to those that are looking into apprenticeships.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Virgin Media O2?
  • At this moment I do not feel as valued as I would have liked to be however I do understand that my program that I have enrolled into is a trail blazer and that a lot of things will need to be looked into. I do feel appreciated by my team and those around me but this apprenticeship is currently very overlooked within the Virgin Community. However on a more positive they looked into this and looking to resolve this as soon as they can.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As the program is a trail blazer they are still learning new responsibilities that come with this apprenticeship, but being part of previous apprenticeships I have known Virgin Media to be very structured and organised. The studying is not done by Virgin Media but rather Aston University and this very structured and organised. However as this is the first time Virgin Media has been involved with Aston, all Aston presentations and information are more geared to solely one company.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As our training provider is Aston University, I have found to immense amount of support and help if and when needed. There have been issues in the past but have been resolved very quickly or an explanation has been provided as to the next steps. All the modules and requirements are updated in good time for us to be able to complete and the support is given when the assignments are due.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have received sufficient amount of support when it comes to our training and learning by my employer. They are always willing to give us the time to complete our studies and give us extra revision time during our Exams. They are always there to give us a helping hand however as this is a pilot program they are learning about the program as much as us and therefore may not always able to help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • We have an excellent salary package here at virgin media, with the amount that we get is beyond many apprenticeships that I have look at. It covers all my costs and leaves me with more at the end however there are some issue with the salary range with Virgin Media apprentices themselves but as this has been flagged it is now being looked into.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We have not been involved much in the outer world as of yet, there have some events but nothing that we have been involved with. In the beginning I got my self-involved with the Brathay Challenge. This required me to get out and about within our own organisation and the outside world. Opportunities like this are rare and very hard to come by.
