  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work within IT Security focusing on Vendor Assessments wherein I am required to review 3rd party vendor services from an IT Security perspective and liaise with the service owner, business owner, legal, procurement and other parts of the business in order to complete our due diligence and come to a decision on whether we can approve this service to go ahead and be on-boarded and if we cannot approve but the business still wish to go ahead, we would have to explain why it cannot be approved and they would have to risk accept depending on the scenario. I also carry out Business As Usual tasks which involve approving request and change tickets and responding to user queries, to name a few.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills whilst working at Nomura. The company offer staff the opportunity to develop our soft and technical skills via either external courses or online or internal courses which can be accessed via our learning portal or an external training portal. I have completed HTML/CSS and Python training which was offered to me by the company. I also attend conferences outside of the company as well as events set up by the company which include either external speakers or internal speakers giving a talk on their career, etc. There are many opportunities to grow at Nomura.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the culture at Nomura very much as they offer the freedom and opportunity to learn and grow as you progress within your career at the company. There are many initiatives you can get involved in to further progress your career. Some that I have been involved in include the Public Speaking society, Women in Nomura events, Charity events, Tech Fayre, amongst other things. All of these coupled with the helpful and supportive nature of colleagues makes Nomura a pleasant place to work at.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Nomura?
  • I feel tremendously valued by the company and my team members and my manager as I am not treated differently for being an apprentice but the same as any other employee. I get recognition and appreciation from my manager when I have completed tasks well. I had taken part in creating the Tech Fayre and was recognised for my contribution with a GEM (Going the Extra Mile) Award. I feel like I have the opportunity to get involved in any projects that peak my interest and I have the ability to voice my opinion or provide my feedback on how things work and whether I think they should be changed and how to go about doing so.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is support provided from HR as an apprentice and we can always go and speak to our HR point person should we need any help, advice or guidance. My managers have been supportive whenever I've required extra time to complete my coursework, etc. You are treated as any other employee from day one and not made to feel like an apprentice which is a good sign and you are given work that is valued. However I do believe there is room for improvement. For example when it comes to managerial training in relation to apprenticeships.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider has been very helpful when it comes to support as we had our assessor at hand whenever we needed help or guidance and they have always been willing to help. Though there is room for improvement in terms of communication and timelines, I do believe overall that the support has been of a good standard.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received tremendous support for completing my apprenticeship work as well as in being treated as a regular employee from everyone. My managers have always been supportive when I required time to complete my apprenticeship tasks and my HR point person has always been at hand to assist as and when required. As mentioned earlier, I do believe there is room for improvement, for example when it comes to managerial training on apprenticeships. Overall, I have had a good experience when it comes to receiving support from my employer.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package meets living costs, travel costs, daily costs and social costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • As mentioned earlier the company holds many events and activities for staff to engage in and therefore there are many opportunities for staff to grow, learn and network. I have taken part in Dodgeball tournaments, carried out voluntary work for charity, attended and am part of the Public Speaking Society, part of the gym at the company, to name a few.

  • 9. Would you recommend Nomura to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Nomura is a great place to work at as it gives you the freedom and opportunity to grow and develop your career. As everyone is quite friendly at the company, you feel at ease when working here and are given many pathways to having a successful career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nomura?
  • Be confident open when presenting yourself. Show a willingness to learn! Depending on how you apply there will be a few back to back interviews, a group exercise and a chat with an apprentice (probably me!). Usually you get trained on the job and by your team members, some teams may also require additional training to be completed as part of the role. Ask any questions you may have about the company culture, your job, etc. to fully understand the job.
