  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a mortgage underwriter and my role consists of me making a financial decision based around risk and judgment. I work mortgage applications on a day to day basis with the main aim being an approval, however, this is depedant on the customers circumstances.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot about new banking products which is useful when assessing a mortgage application, as it gives me a insight into a clients financial situation in more depth.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is enjoyable as it links in well to my current position. It also gives me strong knowledge of the financial market which is important as I am wanting to persue a long career in this industry.

  • I feel very valued - my performance is acknowledged on a regular basis and I feel like a valued member of the bank.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured. There is a lot of support provided and it gives me the opportunity to study in chunks rather than cram everything into small sessions, which is important for absoring information.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive as much support as required - my training provider has hosted revision sessions and additional coaching sessions for the exam, if required.

  • My employer is particularly supportive - they delegate me the time to study throughout the working day.

  • My salary package is exceptional compared to my costs

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of out of work opportunities - I was successful in achieving a secondment to work in Manila for 6 weeks with the bank, which was a great experience. I also have the opportunity to volunteer.

  • Yes

  • The company is very reputable and it has enabled me to excel my career in the bank a lot quicker than imagined.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • Be yourself and show you have the ability to work diversely with a large number of people, as the community at the bank is large.
