  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Apprentice Surveyor. Conversing with clients and completing work for my manager and team in relation to Lease Advisory in real estate. Daily i interact with many people in the office about different matters, but mainly speak to my team and manager around me whether its general social chat or about work matters. Externally i have little interactions as my role doesn't need face to face interaction in order to complete the job, however i do visit the sites we are working on in order to measure the floor areas and speak to the Landlord/Tenant about the requirements they need, however these visits are about once/twice a month. I am responsible for staying on top of and completing work that is needed for the jobs my manager has been given. He will explain the job and work that needs completing and the time frame we have to complete it, and once we have distributed the different sections between us, i am responsible to find the information i need and complete the task in the time frame.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have become a lot more confident when talking to my older piers, while also becoming more independent as i have to take control of the work i have been given and complete it in my own time, while keeping the people around me informed and up to date on my progress on jobs and my whereabouts so my absence is not misunderstood. I have also had internal excel training and obviously have learnt a great deal from the degree i am studying one day a week.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i enjoy work a tremendous amount as i feel i have taken so many large steps in my career path not only with how i act around people but also in the work i am doing. my team are extremely supporting and will answer any question no matter the time of day and do there upmost to give me the best answer they can. the company culture is very relaxed and as an apprentice i feel i can approach anyone in the office and introduce myself without any prejudice against me.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Cushman & Wakefield?
  • i feel as an apprentice at the start you come into the industry not knowing anything, therefore the work and attention you are given has to be limited as you cant complete the same amount as everyone else, however as i progressed with more tasks i felt i was given more value and Independence as my relationship with my manager and colleges grew making me feel as valued as the rest of the team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the whole of my first week was based around the induction into my position as an apprentice, which therefore made the whole process extremely easy and calm. we were explained everything over the first 5 days, meaning that on my first proper day i didn't need to worry about any admin problems, and could focus on meeting my team and getting started with job tasks. once a month all the apprentices have a meeting with the person who runs the apprenticeship scheme and we can convey and issues to her and she will give us feedback or contact the person who can fix it. we are also assigned a buddy who has a more personable relationship about how we are feeling in our role and how are coping with working life. we are also assigned a mentor who can help us deal with more day to day work based issues in the office, all three of whom we can contact at any time.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • our training provider is in constant contact with us whether its just general updates or a pressing matters. through the program there have been problems with transport and technology etc, for which she has been quick to respond on what needs to be done and who to contact. we are always in the loop to changes in our study's and work etc, with any messages from the university going straight through her to us.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am positioned next to my manager who is always conscious of my workload and study's and therefore supports me with jobs he feels i will struggle with and lowers the work load when my study's are the priority for that select amount of time. also, with both a mentor and a buddy any problem i have whether its personal or work related, i have someone to go to.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • the salary covers all my travel and social costs with excess left over as i am still living at home, however i feel as i move into London i will have to be a lot more conscious about my spending, however as the years progress my salary will increase which will make this easier.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I play in the rugby and football team which i was included in as soon as i joined. the firm offers many sports teams both male and female with games happening nearly every other week. the social side of the firm also stands out as many colleges organise to meet up with people outside of work in the same industry, or with clients, meaning there is nearly always something going on outside of work to get involved in.

  • 9. Would you recommend Cushman & Wakefield to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • it offers so many opportunities not only in the real estate industry but also in many other aspects of life from sport to social groups all with the same hobby, while having a friendly and supporting community of colleges all around me.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cushman & Wakefield?
  • Apply if you are serious about having a serious a career in the real estate industry as this provides the perfect opportunity to do so. be yourself in the interview and application process as they want to see what you will bring to the company over the 5 years and not who you can try be on the day, and be honest what you want to get out of the apprenticeship because showing enthusiasm about the goals you want to meet will back up your application.
