  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a business Engineer apprentice is to shadow fellow engineers whilst working on installs and faults over the network covering Scotland west. My daily tasks involve fixing business customers equipment or installing new kit . My responsibilities are to look after the network as a whole and prevent any damage to it also.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learned a variety of new skills and managed to develop some existing skills as well. New skills such as configuring cisco routers and installing hitron modems. GKA the provider are helping me with the comptia network + exam which is a requirement of the exam and I have learned how to set up TiVo boxes, fix and install phone lines, and learned about the different network environments we have in Scotland.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy working for virgin media business. Each day is a learning day regarding to either the work load or the training. The team I work with are understanding as I am just an apprentice and take the extra time to explain a certain process or tool used. I still enjoy working everyday and I have been here 9 months already.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Virgin Media O2?
  • I feel very valued by the company and well respected. My manager constantly praises my work which makes me feel like im making real progress in my role. I recently got nominated and won an award within the company for my report on a certain rack I fixed. The award was for £250 amazon vouchers which I thought was quite generous.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My training days are well organized giving me time to reflect on what I have learnt and what is next. I get constant support from my manager and fellow apprentices across the country as we keep in contact. I have tasks delegated to me but only when I am confident enough to do so and gives me a sense of pride knowing the company trusts me with such a task.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I see my training provider once a month and email responses are quite quick as well. They are friendly and well keen to help me pass my apprenticeship. The training provider helps me with my essay questions and have made up a curriculum to help me pass my apprenticeship. GKA also have an online portal help page if the tutor is from an example on holiday.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I constantly receive support from my manager who makes sure I am not under pressure and still enjoying my role. My mentor is also available when needed and provides me with support regarding different equipment and processes. Each person I have spoken too is more than happy to help and are always approachable

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary meets my costs and when I am fully qualified it will be a good salary I am on. As I have a a van travel costs are none and I live 10 minutes from the local base. However my role requires me to travel across the west of Scotland and with a van that easy enough to travel with all the different equipment needed.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Virgin Media always tries to get group activities within each team such as paintballing or go karting at least every quarter. They are at different locations however still accessible to each engineer to get to and from the event.

  • 9. Would you recommend Virgin Media O2 to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Working for Virgin Media has been one of the best decisions of my life. I constantly learn new skills which are transferable to my life and the people that I am working with are great and willing to help by any means. The salary is good and I feel proud to work for Virgin Media.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Virgin Media O2?
  • To be yourself. Virgin Media is always looking for everybody to be themselves. The interview requires a mixed set of skills such as maths and some IT background knowledge as well as a power point presentation. The only thing I would like to be told would be the apprenticeship requirements, such as the exams needed to pass and what type of coursework.
