  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an electrical engineering apprentice at Schneider Electric. Throughout my apprenticeship i have moved around all the departments at the Leeds site. When i worked on the shop floor i was involved in making all of our products. I then moved on to the offices, my first area was engineering where i was involved in the engineering drawings for genie Evo. I then moved onto Project engineering where i am currently managing customer orders. This involves managing the production of the orders to the delivery.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new skills throughout my apprenticeship as i have been put in many new situations. I learnt practical skills down on the shop floor through using tools and equipment to make the products. I then went onto learning Auto Cad in design engineering and then i have started to learn the skills of project managment. I have developed my communication skills through having to deal with a wide variety of people. I have attended many internal training courses and i have been going to college studying electrical and electronic engineering.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed majority of the programme as i have had the chance to work with a wide variety of people and be exposed to many new situations which have resulted in my challenging myslef. such as travelling abroad to carry out tests on our new product RN2D. However there have been moments where i was doing the same task day in day out which was a downfall. Nevertheless the programme improved and i was moved onto a different area.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Schneider Electric?
  • I have been involved in many different projects throughout my apprenticeship where i have felt valued. With these projects i have also gained recognition for the work i have done as these projects have had a direct impact on the customers experience. I have also received good feedback from managers when i have work in their departments. Sometimes when you were on the shopfloor you get used as just a head to imporve the production which can sometimes affect your training.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There has been an overall structure to the programme which was to have 2 years on the shop floor then 2 years in the offices. There was a delay in the programme due to the production demand meaning I was kept in areas for a longer period than planned. Even with this i feel that actions have been put in place to make sure I get to see most of the departments that are crucial to the training.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Throughout the training i have received a lot of support from the training provider regarding the NVQ as it was noted that we needed to go to other sites to complete our NVQ this was noted and we travelled to a few sites to make sure we completed our training. College throughout the 4 years have been difficult as members have staff have left and this caused a few issues with subjects been put back that then caused delays in the training. But again this was found by the college and actions have been put in place.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Throughout the apprenticeship i have had good support from my employer, when ihave had a problem or an issue at work actions have been put in place to try and solve this. At times this has taken longer than expected but is to be expected with such a big company and the internal processes. I have had frequent 1-2-1's with my manager that have kept track of my progress and making sure i have met my targets that have been set by my manager.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Throughout my apprenticeship i feel that i have been paid well as an apprentice, however when looking at other apprentices that are on my course they seem to be paid a bit more. But i have gained a lot of skils which will hopefully allow me to be paid a good wage when i come out of my time.
