  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the Corporate Tax team, which means I am involved in providing any services relating to tax for companies, from calculating their tax liability to checking their figures and providing advice on the tax implications of various things. Day to day this can involve responding to client queries, going through spreadsheets or and understanding calculations, as well as attending client meetings and liaising with colleagues.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I think one of ths biggest skills I've learned is time management - often I'm juggling a number of tasks/clients at the same time and it's really important to prioritise and manage my time effectively. I'm also developing the skill of professional writing, i.e. how to word emails and letters to be specific and clear about what I'm saying but also maintain a professional tone.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Mostly I enjoy it, particularly the chance to get involved on well-known clients and see how businesses really operate. At times it can be stressful and busy and that's not so fun, but I'm learning to cope with this and embrace the challenge it brings.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • I feel valued, particularly by colleagues in my team. They are all friendly and willing to help, and always say thank you for doing things. We also have regular social events which help us to bond as a team and feel appreciated for the work we do.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Reasonably well organised, my programme involves working full time in the office most of the time, and then block release for a couple of weeks or so at a time to attend college. This works well, and allows me to focus on either college or work and not both at the same time. Exams are also well spaced out, so I don't feel rushed into them and have sufficient time to prepare and revise.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Lots of support - Kaplan are particularly good at providing excellent tuition, helpful course materials in both paper format and online videos and tutorials, as well as having tutors available via email or web chat for any queries.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Reasonably good, we get time away from work to attend college as well as study leave to focus on exams. Colleagues are generally quite understanding of this and don't expect too much when they know we are revising as well.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • At the moment very well, I earn a decent salary and living at home I have few outgoings. I'm saving for a house deposit in a few years' time which should hopefully be achievable when I'm fully qualified.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes, such as team social events which are always fun and a good opportunity to get to know colleagues better. We also have opportunities to get discounted tickets for events, such as Matilda at the theatre or the local football match. There's also sports teams to get involved in if you want to.

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a friendly employer and there's a great culture of support and collaboration amongst everyone.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Make sure you research the company and service lines thoroughly before you apply, so you know what you're going to be doing and are fully informed. Id possible attend a Choices Evening or Discover Day to find out more and chat to current apprentices. Also practice the online tests beforehand, as these can be quite challenging. Most of all remember to be yourself and show who you are, not who you think we want.
