  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Leading Hand at Mulberry and have been for quite a few years now. My day to day tasks are mainly stitching within the production line, helping wherever I can to get our target out. My responsibilities as a team lead are to help my team wherever I can, push them to achieve target, do morning meetings to inform them on repairs within the line and let them know where we are for target on the week. Everyday I come in and support my supervisor and team as best as I can and try my best to help get the line our bonus. Bonus/target is a figure of how many bags we have to do in order to get an extra bonus in our pay each week we are successful.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I started my apprenticeship in 2009 and finished in 2010 and I am still employed by mulberry 9 years later. I learnt so much in my apprenticeship about the leather industry, tanneries, the company and lot's more. Over the last 9 years I have learnt nearly every job role within the production side of the company. My main skill is stitching but I can also do inking, gluing, prepping, trim cut and a little bit of skiving. These are all things that I learnt mainly in my first year but have progressed in more so within my time here. I then got the opportunity to be a leading hand a year after doing my apprenticeship this was a brilliant opportunity for me to be able to progress even more within the company and considering I was only 17 I was very lucky to be given the chance. Last year I got the chance to do another level 2 course in leading hand managing. This taught me a lot more about the business side of the company and I found this very helpful and interesting.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I loved doing the apprenticeship it has helped me get to where I am today with the knowledge that I have. It has gave me more chances to progress further within the company because of all the skills I got to learn that most employee's don't get to. It gave me the chance to meet all the other apprentices and form friendships with them in and out of work. It gave me more confidence knowing I had a group of people in the same position as me because being only 16 it was very nerve racking going out into the real world but mulberry and its apprentice leaders made I very easy to settle in.

  • I do feel valued within my team at Mulberry and by my supervisor but I do feel like more could be done from the managers side of things to show they feel the same.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Considering I did the programme back in 2009 I feel it was very well managed with the supervisor and college teacher doing everything they could for us at all times, making it fun, taking us out on trips and giving us all the tools we could possibly want or need. Bare in mind the teachers and supervisors have changed a couple of times since then so I can only comment on my own experience.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received so much support from my training provider. The 2 men in charge of the course 1 within mulberry and 1 from outside could not of done anymore for us. The passion they had for teaching and guiding us was outstanding. Not only could you ask them anything about work if you needed someone to talk to on a personal level they were always there.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My supervisor while I done the apprenticeship was the most supporting person I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He had so much respect from everybody because he gave us all the same in return. He was fun and caring and just an all round lovely man which made doing the course the best that it could be. He had so much passion for pushing us all the be better it made us want to try even harder.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Starting when I was 16 I was only getting paid £4.70 but because I had nothing to pay for like car insurance etc. this was plenty for me to live on. If I had other commitments I don't think they pay would of been enough and I don't think pay should be lower than other employees especially when you work just as hard as everyone else.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Considering I've worked for Mulberry for 9 years I feel like it is a big family. There's not really anyone I don't know and I enjoy coming to work and being around those people doing a job that I enjoy. I love stitching and get great satisfaction out of knowing that when I see pictures of famous people carrying bags that I was a part of that.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mulberry?
  • Do your research on the company before your interview this always looks good and wont take long to pick some key facts online. Don't be scared or nervous when going out into the factory its not as scary as it looks everyone is friendly. Take your time with the application and be honest.
