  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current job title is third year electrical craft apprentice, I am currently working on the AW189 HM Coastguard and it is going through its final stage before acceptance from the customer. Daily tasks include carrying out functional checks, sorting out any outstanding snags (faults), replacing un-serviceable units and making sure the aircraft is clean and FOD (foreign object debris) free.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since the start of the apprenticeship everything i have learnt has been a new skill, from understanding wiring diagrams to working hands on with the different types of complex units installed on the various aircraft's we work with. working on-site and actually gaining experience in my eyes is more valuable and beneficial than most of the knowledge gained from college. As-well as learning the trade and skills within that trade, i have also improved in areas such as confidence, interacting with different people and working efficiently in team but also individually too.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program has been tough and challenging but overall it has been very enjoyable. The chance to meet new people, gain new skills, work as a team and the ability to see for your own eyes how your contribution has helped an aircraft achieve completion is rare as-well as sentimental. The only issues that i came across on the apprenticeship was the organisation of the college and the criteria taught, this may have been due to the new type of courses given (Trailblazers)but nonetheless i am happy with everything else.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Leonardo?
  • I personally feel very valued by Leonardo. Recognition from both the training team and the aircraft manager has been shown through out the scheme. At work i am always getting involved with the tasks and at no point i haven't not felt involved

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Everything with the program has been organised/structured apart from college. Due to the brand new program there has been allot of ups and downs and nothing has ever ran smooth and we have been affected due to this.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is extremely well and you can easily live on it taking into account that i am still going college once a week and it being an apprenticeship scheme. It covers the costs of rent, car, fuel, social and there is enough money to put a little bit away for savings.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots to go outside of work, there is an apprentice committee which offers lots of events to do whether it is paintballing, football, nights out etc. I have gained gym membership discount through the company and I also play football for a local football team.

  • 9. Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Not many people can say that they work on Aircraft and it is a big achievement to say so. It's a well paid apprenticeship which will give you the opportunity to build skills and also gives you confidence in a different surrounding. Aerospace is a huge industry and Leonardo is the perfect company to represent.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • Give it your best shot, it took myself three attempts to finally get in. so never give up and to your best to stand out.
