  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Trainee Fibre Jointer working on installing fibre optic cable to new housing developments. This involves work in telephone exchanges, the fibre spine and in customer properties.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Fibre jointing skills. Working on OCR racks and a range of different nodes and joints. Plus associated tasks such as signing, lighting and guarding and pole climbing/drop wiring.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The practical elements of the course have been very good.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • Having left teaching, where I felt incredibly under valued; working for Openreach has restored much of the self belief that had been eroded by teaching.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme on the whole was detailed and well structured. There have been some issues during the buddying process and on the job learning but these have been resolved over the duration of the course.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have received a good level of support from my colleagues and manager. The trainers on the course were also helpful and knowledgeable.

  • My manager and colleagues have been supportive and have allowed me time to learn my new role.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As an apprentice with no telecoms experience the salary is more than fair. The overall package offered is excellent.

  • The company offers a wide range of opportunities to volunteer or for extra training. Plus the Perks at Work website.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have enjoyed the training and the practical aspects of the job. There is no expectation on the individual to pay for any equipment r resources from their own pocket. Everything needed for the role is supplied by Openreach.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be prepared, understand the business and the direction in which it is moving.
