  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Test Analyst Apprentice. My main role is to carry out tests on products created by BT to ensure that they work to the customer's specifications and that they function correctly. My typical day would usually consist of running tests that we have created in our database and either passing them off or raising defects if there are problems. I am also responsible for creating Test Scripts, Test Progress Reports and also Test Completion Reports. I am currently involved in a long term project of providing the DWP with telephony systems.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently attending college alongside my apprenticeship job to gain a Telecommunications and IT qualification issued by Stoke College. As well as this, I'm involved in numerous Computer Based Training courses that were created internally in order to broaden my skills and to gain internal qualifications that will let me move around within the company.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have always wanted to work in the IT field and Testing is a new and exciting experience to me. My coaches have said to me that after my apprenticeship I am free to move around in the company. I am thinking of going into a developer role/cyber security. The team that I'm are very supportive to me and help me whenever I have questions or doubts about the job. All in all, I'm currently enjoying myself working for BT.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • I feel very valued as an Apprentice. My manager always tries to inform me about things I can get involved in such as internal charity projects or training courses. I am also heavily involved within the project that my team is currently working on and I do not feel excluded from BT at all.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My induction in Balbrough was very informative, I went along with apprentices and graduates who were part of Business and Public Sector. We got to meet the senior members of BT and talked about what we do in BT. I feel like BT is lacking staff on the coaching side of things. As a result, we don't always get the face-to-face support that we need as apprentices to carry out our theory work and other problems.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My apprenticeship coach always strives to give me and the other apprentices feedback on our work and actions but unfortunately I feel like he is constantly being overwhelmed as there is not enough staff on the coaching department. Otherwise to support I get from my coach is exceptional and their attitude is brilliant.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I know that I have many people to turn to if I have any issues with work or personal life that may affect my work. There are also confidential hotlines that are managed by the BT HR Team that I can call if I don't feel comfortable raising the issue with my manager.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary I receive every month is very good. It meets my needs and it also allows me to enjoy myself by being able to try out new experiences and go on holidays. Business trips are always paid for and if needed a hire car will be provided to you. I am very happy with the employment package that I have.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The apprenticeship team always strives to give us as many opportunities as possible. As well as that, there are many volunteering events that we can take part in too. There are periodic team night outs where we go for dinner and drinks and there are also other events such as training with the British Army reserves to let us experience and learn new skills.

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The pay and benefits of being part of BT are one of the biggest reasons why they should join BT. Employees get many discounts off BT products such as broadband and TV as well as their own pension pot. BT always strives to create a brilliant work atmosphere which I personally have experienced and I have enjoyed working here ever since I joined.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • CVs are important. Try and keep it to 1 page and sell yourself as much as possible. Discuss the skills that you developed and why that makes you better than the other candidates. Video Interviews are also common during the recruitment process. Wear smart clothes and find a quiet room so that you can focus on your answers. Be calm and don't panic. During the assessment day at one of BT's assessment centres, always keep in mind that you are not competing with the other candidates. Rather, you are trying to sell yourself to the examiners. Focus on what you are good at, not what the other people are good at.
