1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
My role is on the Helpdesk. This role involves calling customers to help them resolve any issues they have raised with our products. These issues can range from simple questions about our products, networking issues, or hardware faults. I am responsible for getting these issues resolved as quickly as possible so the customers printing environment is up and running again. Phoning customers to resolve issues is a daily external interaction we have to make.
2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have had multiple training courses on different products, including scanners and printers. These courses have given me a greater understanding of how these types of devices work and interact with each other.
I have also had training on how to promote my personal brand, allowing me to understand how others perceive me.
My role at Canon has allowed me to become more confident as a person, both inside and outside of work.
3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
I enjoy everyday at Canon. I learnt something new every day on my apprenticeship. I am surrounded by a friendly team who are always willing to help should I need it. Canon is also a great company to work for, and has a great brand to go with it. The apprenticeship at Canon met all my expectations.
4. How valued do you feel by Canon UK?
I feel very valued at Canon. I feel like a vital member of the team. I always received appreciation for my work, from both my manager and other members of my team. Customers will also thank me and in some cases congratulate me for fixing their issues with their Canon devices.
5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
The apprenticeship at Canon was organised to a high standard. The training for my role involved taking online courses, and listing in on calls that other members of my team were on. This allowed me to get an understanding of how I needed to work. I also had product specific training a few months in.
6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
The support from my training provider is excellent. The assessor comes in once a month to check our coursework and to make observations. We can also ask him any questions about the apprenticeship and coursework that we might have. If we need to ask a question while he is not at Canon, he is always available over email. The college is always happy to help should I need it.
6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
I receive a great deal of support from my employer. My manager and team leader are always there to help when I have a question related to my role in Canon. HR are also very friendly and happy to help should I have any questions that they can help. Everyone in Canon is glad to help you if they can.
7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
My salary meets my costs. With the apprenticeship salary I can easily afford my travel and rent payments. I can also afford to send money on food, etc. Although the apprenticeship wage is very competitive, it was disheartening at times when the person next to me doing the same job was on almost double pay.
8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
There are lots of opportunities out of work. For example, there is an exercise class that runs during lunch time, there is a Costa Coffee inside the building where you can go for lunch with your friends. There are also festive activities such as a Christmas lunch at one of the local pubs, etc.
9. Would you recommend Canon UK to a friend?
I would recommend a Canon UK to a fried. Canon is a good company to work for with a strong and recognisable brand. Everyone is friendly and are happy to help.
The apprentice Salary is very competitive in its sector. And if you get offered a full-time job, there are lots of opportunities that you can seek out regarding other job roles.
10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Canon UK?
Depending on what job role you are applying for, do your research. If you are going to apply for a helpdesk based role, do your research on networking, or look at some error codes online. Make sure to look presentable on the day of the interview and turn up on time.
