  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is on the Helpdesk. This role involves calling customers to help them resolve any issues they have raised with our products. These issues can range from simple questions about our products, networking issues, or hardware faults. I am responsible for getting these issues resolved as quickly as possible so the customers printing environment is up and running again. Phoning customers to resolve issues is a daily external interaction we have to make.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have had multiple training courses on different products, including scanners and printers. These courses have given me a greater understanding of how these types of devices work and interact with each other. I have also had training on how to promote my personal brand, allowing me to understand how others perceive me. My role at Canon has allowed me to become more confident as a person, both inside and outside of work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship at Canon was organised to a high standard. The training for my role involved taking online courses, and listing in on calls that other members of my team were on. This allowed me to get an understanding of how I needed to work. I also had product specific training a few months in.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support from my training provider is excellent. The assessor comes in once a month to check our coursework and to make observations. We can also ask him any questions about the apprenticeship and coursework that we might have. If we need to ask a question while he is not at Canon, he is always available over email. The college is always happy to help should I need it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary meets my costs. With the apprenticeship salary I can easily afford my travel and rent payments. I can also afford to send money on food, etc. Although the apprenticeship wage is very competitive, it was disheartening at times when the person next to me doing the same job was on almost double pay.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of opportunities out of work. For example, there is an exercise class that runs during lunch time, there is a Costa Coffee inside the building where you can go for lunch with your friends. There are also festive activities such as a Christmas lunch at one of the local pubs, etc.
