  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently a Fibre Engineer Apprentice within Openreach, within the BT Group. day to day I go out building and maintaining the network that allows us all to enjoy super and untra fast broadband. I normally work in a team of 2 and sometimes come across customers that have been dreaming of the day that their street becomes fibre enabled. I am responsible for my own work that is pinned by my controller. it is up to me to see it through to the finish.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In the first few months of working in BT I had a mass of training. this was split between general network training, such as climbing a pole and going in holes. to fibre network training. it was really good fun getting to stay in hotels and living the life of riley for a few weeks but also the standard of training was second to none.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the fact that day-to-day I am seen as one of the team and not as an apprentice. The team have a good bond and go out often outside of work. the company has a culture to look after each other and to help when someone needs it. it has surpassed my expectations working for BT and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • During the 18 months I have been with the company I have received our own e-cards on more than 15 occasions. these are a digital form that can be sent by anyone in the company to say thank you for the good work that you have done. once 5 are accumulated then you receive a £25 card to spend on anything, its great. I have always been the first to put my hand up for volunteering and that has made me feel really proud to represent BT at events and feel an ambassador for the company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My induction for the first 6 weeks was planned out to the T. we had different training schools to attend each week around the country but BT took care of everything. we had a van to travel in (brand new) hotels and food all sorted and details of the trainer and location at each BT training school. there isn't so much studying more practical assessments but these are tough as it has to be right to pass.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • at BT I am lucky enough that I have no travel costs due to having a van that I can take home. my salary since joining was increased significantly during my first year and as I receive a London weighting I think I am right in saying I am probably one of the best paid apprentices around. the location of my role can be anywhere the business needs me, but usually within a 60 minute drive of my home location. living costs are a minimum as I live at home but support with some rent. this means I can save during my apprenticeship and hopefully afford to move out eventually.
