  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Switch & Transmission engineer. This role requires me to locate, analyse and fix faults. Each day is different, whether I am going to a different telephone exchange or fixing a different fault.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am constantly learning new skills whilst working with BT, I have gained a lot more confidence within my team. I am also learning new skills from my buddy on how to do my job as best as I can.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme very much , it has allowed me to gain knowledge of something which will always be around. I also enjoy that I constantly have hands on learning which, for me, makes it a lot easier to learn.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • As there are a limited number of Switch & Transmission engineers I feel like I will be valued by BT when I accumulate my apprenticeship.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well organised as it gives me time to learn on the job,learn my college course and carry out my NVQ work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support I receive from my trainers are good, they give me the time to help me if I need it.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer also gives me a lot of support and ensures I am learning at a good pace.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My package meets me expectations as a first year apprentice and as my pay increases each year I am very impressed.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes, by working with such a large company there are many opportunities within BT to try different lines of work.

  • Yes

  • BT offers a friendly place to work with many opportunities to work in different lines of business.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Work as hard as you can to get into the apprenticeship and if you are fortunate enough to be successful. When you join work as hard as possible to work your way up and into BT.
