  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is in the Corporate Legal Team of Colt Technology Services in London. On a day to day basis, I liaise internally with different functions such as Corporate Finance, HR, DCS and Sales with legal matters which may arise. I help many people within the legal team too with many jobs such as raising Purchase Orders, helping with approvals, incorporation of new companies and company secretarial matters.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting at Colt I have really developed my English reading and writing skills as I am constantly writing formal/informal emails, letters or communicating with others in the office of externally. All apprentices also had business writing skills training which really gave me a good in-site to different skills and tips that I now use every day. It was delivered by a in-house lawyer so was great practice. I have managed to adapt myself and communication styles in different circumstances too and another way my communication has developed is from training by an external person for self presentation and communication training. This has been the most beneficial training to date and we have had 4 afternoon sessions since I started in my role. Also internally, all apprentices had excel training which was great as I didn't think I would be too exposed to excel much with being in the legal team. However its has proved useful since being in the company. Externally, I have learnt great skills that I put to use, since I have been at BPP University studying my Paralegal Level 3 Legal qualification.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying all aspects of the programme. I am enjoying coming to work and really get involved in real life work. My team are great to work with every day in which they make me feel welcome, are always willing to help and that I have made some great relationships within the team; making everything more enjoyable. Also outside of my team I have met some great people socially and through working together on matters at work. Its great to have people you know round the office and good for networking and meeting different people with different roles, experiences, ages ect. A huge factor which has made my time here so far so enjoyable, is the fact that I started with 12 other apprentices. Although they aren't all in Legal, I have made some really good friendships and we all get along so well in work and outside of work. It has really made my experience better. The companies culture is great here with many initiatives and events to really 'challenger culture'. There are many opportunities to really get involved and is very enjoyable.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Colt Technologies?
  • I do overall feel valued by Colt as everyone does make a huge effort with the apprentices and graduates, in making sure they feel involved, every day chat which shows interest in getting to know us and social events on getting to know people and know what I do. My manager is great in really supporting me and helping. She is always giving me positive feedback and letting me know good comments that she receives from others in the company. She of course gives me constructive feedback on areas I could do with improving but she makes me feel valued. There are many opportunities in which I can get involved and can really show myself to Colt; ones which I have done so far such as various CSR events, cake sales and training days.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation within Colt is great, from the initial induction day which gave us a run down of the company which was really beneficial before heading into my team. That really did help with many things such as nerves, knowledge and was a great welcome. My training provider, BPP Law School, are great with giving materials for studying as the resources are all in one central online location and it shows weeks in advance work. This enables me to see what is coming up and letting me keep on-top of my studies.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider are ok with support. I cannot fault my apprenticeship Manager at the law school, she is always responsive, reassuring and willing to help. However, I feel BPP can be abit disorganised in their internal communication of what goes on with the apprentices. My tutors from online tutorials have been great in helping, some feedback could be stronger as others show more interest than others; however, overall it is good.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer are very supportive in many ways. With studying, they understand the intensity of the work and study life balance, giving me every Monday off of work where I can solely focus on study. They give me more time if I have assessments due or require study days for exams which really relieves the pressure. My HR are approachable and helpful on many matters. My managers too are great, understanding and supportive on my work and progression.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary does meet my costs very well in that it can cover all living, travel and social costs that I incur. I was pleased with the salary I receive, the benefits and bonus as I know many people my age in a corporate company who don't get as much as Colt's apprentices. It is great and a real drive to do well and succeed.

Activities such as language club, baking and There is also a high voluntary imitative rate with a sponsored charity elected every year which Colt do many activities for to raise money for. There are many sporting activities available for everyone such as a charity bike ride which is aboard from one city to another; this year is Rome to Milan. As well as a charity run which happens every year. I could go on all day with opportunities to get involved in various things that Colt provide.

  • 9. Would you recommend Colt Technologies to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Yes, as Colt is a welcoming, successful, interesting place to work which overall is enjoyable in many ways. Since the start I have felt valued and constantly having opportunities to develop myself and my career. It is a busy work place but is great in getting yourself involved. You can meet some great people and learn lots in such a short space of time due to being surrounded by such high talent in the whole company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Colt Technologies?
  • To really show yourself in the video interview, people will value really getting to know you on a personal level and that to an extent of course but not everything has to be formal. Some personality is great. Of course not initially in the interview but showing yourself isn't always bad. To not be nervous for interviews as they understand it is your first full time job and the first time you have done anything like this.
