  • I am a track apprentice, working in the technical office. Carrying out surveying, platform gauging, machine work and further technical jobs within the railway. The job involves office and practical work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The apprenticeship has allowed me to gain a variety of skills. Training courses within 2-3 year, allow you to gain competencies to put to use when you get back to the depot. Training in the first has no relevancies to the railway.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Enjoyed the programme. Make friends for life in the first year, gain a variety of skills and knowledge, giving you a good platform to progress a career

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Network Rail?
  • Everyone within the depot makes you feel valued, they involve you in all tasks which are going on and try to help you gain new skills throughout.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship is well organised, however there is communication issues throughout, which are not communicated across well.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The instructors provide good support when training at Sultan, they provide you with the correct information to pass the course. Whenever stuck they always try to help.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Manager and staff provide good support. As there is previous apprentices now within the technical team, they are able to help throughout.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • First year salary in Sultan was ok, salary increases throughout the years within the apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There is always activities to take part in outside work, which get depots together

  • 9. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Allows you to gain knowledge and experience while earning a living. The skills and knowledge you gain are very good and provides you within a stepping stone to progress further within the company.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • Make sure you gain knowledge on the different disciplines within the company, before going for the interview. Apprenticeship accommodation in first year has changed from sultan to Westwood, so wouldn't be able to comment on the facilities there.
