  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Openreach Fibre engineer and I build the infrastructure of the fibre network to new build housing sites. I regularly have to manage my own day with the tasks that are given to me.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am on my way to completing my Level 2 diploma in telecommunications and IT competence. Also I have learned many new skills vital to my job, such as how to splice fibres together and how the network works.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy all aspects of my learning so far, the field based buddy learning has been vital to give me the skills to do what I need to do and the class based learning has been valuable in giving me the correct credentials to do what I do.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • Very as I feel I have progressed quickly and have many more responsibilities than when I started.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The NVQ program has a good pace set as I feel I can be a field engineer in my day to day work and then am given plenty of time in guided learning to do the NVQ work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have had a lot of support from everyone from the time I started and even now the support continues, everyone is willing to help.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much as I request, my manager, senior engineer, and other experienced engineers are always there when I need them.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My current salary is slightly more than that of my last job so for me it is adequate.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes I have joined the ITP and have regular chances for external events.

  • Yes

  • Good working atmosphere, good place for a hands on career, and great career prospects.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be yourself and don't worry as the interviews and assessment days are not as bad as they sound.
