  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a fibre jointing engineer for Openreach (BT) and work as part of the Business and Corporate Delivery team. This means that it is my job to visit customers that come under Business/Corporate properties and get them connected to the network. This includes work in the exchange, at the customer and everything in between. I interact daily with customers and colleagues (I work in a team, not as a lone worker) and also have contact with everyone in the company, should I require it. It is my responsibility to ensure that we deliver great customer service, connect the customer to their desired network as quickly as possible as well as all other aspects of being an employee of BT whilst keeping up to date with my apprenticeship work requirements.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since joining I have both learnt and developed new skills. I have been awarded externally recognised qualifications such as NRSWA and EUSR. I have attended courses to ensure I know exactly what I should be doing and what is expected of me as well as the importance of mine, and my colleagues/customers safety.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I honestly cannot be more grateful to have been given this amazing opportunity. I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship as a whole. My team are great and the connections I have made internally and externally since my journey started are priceless.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • I feel as though I am valued by BT on many levels. By my team, my manager, the network I have created for myself, my apprenticeship coach and just generally by the sheer amount of opportunities I have had whether this be finding out about the company, being sent on various training courses, travelling all over the country, conferences, workshops etc.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well structured. My induction was fabulous and I gained a great insight on what to expect and the timeframes of the majority of my training courses etc. I have had extensive training and have been entitled to 1 study day every 3 weeks (more can be had if required).

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive a lot of support from my tutor/assessor as well as being able to speak to other tutors etc. within the company. My coach is highly supportive and has a great attitude towards me and the work I complete. I feel I can go to my coach with any problem I may have whether concerning apprenticeship work, my role or any concerns I have.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is really supportive and I have access to all information I need in regards to any HR concerns, overtime, annual leave etc.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My pay is really good considering I am an apprentice. We also get rises annually as an apprentice on top of the standard annual rise the rest of the company get. BT covers all training costs including travel accommodation and food.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes there are. I went to Madrid last September, to attend a conference. I have also done varied other things such as workshops, school visits and career fairs

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have already recommended numerous friends and family members to apply and some have done and have been successful in their applications. I cannot thank BT enough for what I have gained and my sheer happiness I get from working in such an amazing role.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Read everything that gets sent to you, research and just be truthful. They provide you wish all the information you need and more. Its important that if you want the job that you show them this. The application process may seem a bit different from others but this is so they can ensure its the best outcome for both parties. Assessment days are daunting at first like any interview, but afterwards you will be so glad you did it.
