  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Outside Broadcast Engineer. This involves going to different live events whatever it may be (most of the time sporting events like football, rugby or horse racing events) and broadcasting it so that it is available on TV for consumers. We have to bid on contracts for different events such as the Premier League contract from SKY or Racing UK contract for horse racing etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • For this apprenticeship I had to attend college in blocks to attain a Level 3 BTEC in Telecommunications and Electrical. I am also doing NVQ work as well. By the end of my apprenticeship I will be trained on fibre optics and satellite. I have been on some external training courses such as Sony courses about vision and audio.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I work in a very small team which means we all get on very well as we know each other quite well. Also, we are always travelling to jobs and staying over at different venues as we could be anywhere in the UK so travelling after a long day is not advised.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • I am involved in many different projects such as upgrades at venues as most venues are installing UHD circuits now. This is an important job so it makes me feel valued as I am trusted with it.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary is very basic and doesn't include any over time for things like weekends that I sometimes work, instead I'm just given days off. When we work away and have to stay over, we are given money for food and hotels are paid for. As a young driver, a lot of my salary goes towards to my car insurance so I have just enough to live on after that.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are volunteering opportunities outside of work.

    5/10

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a good place to work as there are many different opportunities and many different departments within BT. There's always emails about vacancies within BT so you can move around regularly.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • BT is very much about working as a team so in the assessment days make sure you're looking out for everyone and allowing everyone to have their say etc.
