  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is an apprentice technician. This involved constantly learning while working while benefitting from others knowledge and experience. My role allows me to work on many different types of vehicle and even trailers so my knowledge grows fast in the working environment

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In this role you learn new skills every day, this can be working on electric vehicles, electrical systems or even basic hydraulic and mechanical systems. My skills working as a team also come into play a lot from working with others day in day out, but also there are times when you are required to work alone which in this role I am very comfortable with.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I work with a very good and welcoming team who make me feel very involved and are keen to pass on there knowledge to me. The programme superseded my expectations as I am a lot more ''on the tools'' than I would have expected and am working alone a lot more the further I progress which is very encouraging. The working day/week is good as I learn but also have enough time to myself.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • BT regularly emphasise how proud they are of their apprentices, and how they are working to make them become the best. It is obvious we mean a lot to our company by how highly they rate us and want us to progress. BT are a very welcoming company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Our programme is very well organised, with a 'timetable' being released at the start of every learning year so we know the dates we will be working and the dates we will be at college on our studies. We get internal and external training to progress us with our learning which becomes very useful in the workplace. We have regularly 1 to 1s which lets us know our progress.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have a mentor in the workplace who regularly checks up on me and my work and offers encouraging comments, while also helping me to overcome problems with guidance from their vast experience. Our tutors at college are very empathetic and know to teach individuals by their own circumstances and again have a lot of knowledge in the trade that they are teaching.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Whether it be personal problems or problems relating to work, my manager/hr team are always there to support me to ensure that I am in the best ethic to work at all times. I feel very safe and supported by my employer.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary and perks reflect very well on the company as being an apprentice I am earning more than a lot of full time workers in other jobs/trades. My location isn't close to my workplace but my base pay easily covers this while still having money to spare to spend on myself and other costs. At college we get a generous allowance allowing us to save money whilst training.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many company events in BT whether this be volountary charitable work or paid trips to other sites. I recently undertook a trip to London to teach young school students about our work with BT and this was very beneficial.

    9/10

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a fantastic company to work for, which is getting bigger by the day. The progress and forward thinking of the company is very exciting and I am proud to be a part of it. Anybody learning this amount of knowledge whilst earning is very lucky to have the opportunity.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • My tips would be to be yourself, show yourself what you can bring to the company and be prepared. It is a very large company and it will only take on the best candidates. So make yourself stand our and show what you can do.
