  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is an Electronic/Electrical engineer. My daily tasks and primary role is to look after and maintain the power in BT exchanges which is the main thing that keeps internet, phones and even ATMs running due to the traffic likely passing through the exchanges we look after. Another key item besides cables and electrical work is our backup generator engine sets which can take over if our incoming mains power is disrupted. This ensures that internet and phones can continue through power cuts. This is why your phone still works during a power cut, due to the work that I do!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have gained many qualifications relating to electrical work such as an NVQ in electrical engineering, BTEC in Electrical and Electronics, first aid courses, climbing courses to name but a few. There is a continuous drive for new and exciting skills to be learnt, and skills are always being developed day-to-day.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work is varied. The work we do can be challenging at times and sometimes work needs to be done to meet targets which can get motivation up to push hard to get things finished. The company thrives on the success of the work we do, and I thoroughly enjoyed the programme.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • I feel very valued by BT. We get rewards in the form of a cash card from time to time if our manager feels it is happy to do so. There are also regular progress updates which we can see the outcome and progress overall from the work that we personally carry out at the sites we look after.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • This has been being developed over the past few years and has gained structure. The courses are set out to gently build confidence over the first part of year one, and then steps up as more experience, confidence and knowledge is built throughout the remainder of the apprenticeship programme. It is very good and confidence and friendships are built along the way.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training providers are great as they are trained to deliver the needed information efficiently and with full knowledge too, so even the toughest of questions to aid our learning can be answered in no time. This has helped my gain vast amounts of information and understanding of a subject that I knew very little before joining the company.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The company give the support needed to allow completion of all courses and work. Tools, clothing and course travel are provided which makes attending courses all that more easier and less stressful. Where help is needed in a whole manner of circumstances, the company does try to do what it can where possible.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I have been able to improve my quality of living through the improved salary that this job provides. This has worked really well as my partner recently lost out on a new work deal which was not so good, but this was soaked up through my upgrade in salary here.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The friendships and close working partnership nature of the job has lead to many of us attending social evenings and catch-ups. These have been attended with past colleagues too of the company and the team I work with, which is great to share how things have changed, for better or worse.

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Growing company. Big opportunities. Friendships. Challenging and new experiences. No two days are truly the same. Exciting developments to be seen as the company moves into a new year. A chance to see hands on what technology has brought us too. I’d recommend BT to everyone who wants a new challenging but rewarding career

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • The work is fast paced and sometimes challenging. Some work is out of hours, but for the majority of work, the work times are during the day. No two days are the same which makes the weeks fly by as you enjoy working with new things and solving complex issues to gain satisfaction by the end of it.
