  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am working as a Telephone engineer providing, repairing and sometimes removing telephone lines from homes and businesses. Each day is different, in fact each job is different so it is never boring. I am dealing directly with the public daily and mostly we work alone. It can be tough being alone sometimes but the team is really good and the support network is excellent so we always get help when we need it.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have had to sit maths, English and IT exams since I started. I have also had loads of internally required skills from climbing poles to working underground we cover everything. We also have to get the CSC card for utilities workers in the street and we had to take a roadworks guarding course so we can setup and take down traffic management systems and create worksites.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It has been tough at times, frustrating at times and very challenging. But with all of that it has been brilliant as we are learning constantly. The culture in BT is very inclusive which is great as everyone is treated equally and fairly. It has exceeded my expectations.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • We have regular team meetings and our manager is always very appreciative of our work. When things do not go according to plan though he is really supportive and finds solutions so we can continually improve, the culture means you are not worried when you make a mistake because you have support. There is also a rewards and recognition programme allowing people to send eCards of appreciation this is a great tool

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There are some areas for improvement, some managers are better than others at recognising what we need. For our NVQ documents we need photos of pole climbs etc. which you cannot do yourself and I think it would have been better to do this as a group to ensure everyone had what was needed.
