  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is Assistant Technician and I am part of the Structures team. This role involves producing 3D Revit models as well as drawings which include plans, elevations, sections and details. I interact with Engineers on the team, they give me sketches and markups of their design and I input the information into the 3D model.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new software such as Revit and AutoCAD. I have improved my use of Microsoft Office, especially my use of Excel. By working as part of a large team, I have improved my communication and teamwork skills. I have also improved my time management skills by having to manage work and University workloads.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall I enjoy my day to day work and the team of people that I work with. I also enjoy attending University and putting what I have learnt into practice in the workplace. I also enjoy the culture and social aspects of the company. The programme has met my expectations and I would recommend it to others.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Arup?
  • Overall I feel valued by Arup. Mostly within my team as I receive appreciation from my manager. I also feel valued when people come to me for advice regarding Revit as I am usually able to help them with these problems. I am also thanked for putting in extra time in order to meet deadlines.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised and structured. I attend University one day a week which is a full day so we get the most out of it. I am also able to use some time in work to complete University work. Each week I am given a list of projects I will be working on.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I do not have a training provider but the University liaises with my employer to ensure that requirements are being met on both sides. I receive support from my manager if I have a lot of University work to do, and can use some work time to complete it. I also have a personal tutor at University who I can ask about University related issues.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. They allow me time at work to revise and complete coursework. They also cover travelling costs to university. My manager also tries to find me work that is relevant to my studies and complements them so that I can put into practice what I have learnt. I work with my manager daily so support is very accessible.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary more than meets my costs. My travel costs are relatively low and I do not have many other major expenses. I do not currently rent accommodation but I would be able to afford it if I wanted to. I can afford to run a car and have a social life as well as being able to contribute towards a pension and savings.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of community related events outside of work such as working with schools and local charities. A main focus in schools is promoting STEM activities. There are also lots of social events which cover a wide range of interests and hobbies. The company also promotes sporting events including running and football.

  • Yes

  • Arup is good company to work for. There are lots of opportunities for all levels of employees which include everyone.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • Be punctual, smart and friendly when attending assessment days or interviews. Show an interest in the company and engineering in general. Try and gain some experience prior to applying and research the job role as much as possible.
