  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently an Assistant technician at Arup with the aim of progressing into an engineering role after completing the degree. My daily tasks include mainly CAD based work, making changes to drawings, cutting cross section and occasionally some design work in 3D models. I am on day release to college 1 day a week studying my HNC in construction & the built environment, due to finish June 2018.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a huge variety of skill since working at Arup, from CAD skills to report writing and even communication skills. I have also improved my confidence in speaking to engineers and clients.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Working at Arup has a great atmosphere with social events held regularly. Some days can be quite depending on workload and therefore can be a little boring from time to time, however majority of the time you are busy working on a variety of jobs.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Arup?
  • All of the apprentices at Arup work very closely with our managers and have a good bond, forming a communication link between lower and hgiher levels. Sometimes treatment towards some apprentices comes across as favoured or unfavoured, althought this is not the intention.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship has had an excellent structure throughtout my early years, however recent complications with further education post HNC have led to some feeling confused.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Support is always avaliable although the apprentices tend to help each other out when it comes to coursework.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • For career guidance and support the managers are always happy to talk as well as being willing to help with any other issues we might have.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I belive my salary to be very good compared to what others can offer, although it can still be tough with the cost of travel and living increasing faster than my salary.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are always oppurtunities out of work for sport, charitable or social activies.

  • 9. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe Arup to be an excellent company to work for with great company and personal benefits. The structure used to help those in early careers is great for progressing your career.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • Make sure you stand out, show something that makes you different from everyone else; a special skill or hobbie. Make sure to be professional and mature but also with a personality and humour.
