  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is that of a Dimensional Maturation and Build Integrity engineer. This involves assessing CAD single parts and assemblies and judging the feasibility of how all these go together to incorporate design rules to enable flexibility and good dimensional accuracy into the stampings or into the tooling. Then it extends into plants to monitor and trial the parts in which i have to get parts modified or modify the tooling myself. All this then looks at measurement data to assess the dimensional accuracy and stability until the vehicle is good the mass production.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills. The main one being with communication and IT. having such a responsibility means that skills are constantly tested and improved with many different training courses being made available for me from driving to environmental awareness. There is also funding for me to learn a new skill outside of work, a set amount allowed per year.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • I feel very valued at my company, i am not treated like an apprentice but more like a full time employee in which i am. I get the respect and recognition the same as everyone else and this is shown in many different ways by the company and my team with acknowledgements.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is fairly well structured however there is disconnect between the university side and the work side. Luckily my team and area fully support my learning and apprenticeship and are more than helpful. However the 2 sides seem to be miles apart with little to no communication with each other, other than through me.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Support is not the greatest, the training provider through university lacks a lot of individualisation and difference from normal University students. Lectures can be long and not thought through, often repeat same points over and over again with assignments that are not the clearest. There have been issues with marking and criteria with all these that i know a lot of apprentices have been complaining about.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support from my employer is at the highest and i couldn't recommend them enough. Whatever i want to do or learn then they help me achieve it with the most possible help. They want the employees to be the best and the happiest and make working for them very enjoyable and comfortable. Support from my department is way more than should be expected and guidance is phenomenal. I could't find fault with support from my employer if i tried.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well, I have to travel a lot but this is covered with expenses. The pay rises are outstanding for an apprenticeship and more than covers all costs needed. It pays as though it is a normal full time job instead of an apprenticeship and rises the more qualified you get.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes, emails are sent out weekly on events that the company are engaging in and usually offer discount for employees to get involved. There are CSR events so that you can go and help the local community with a team on different projects as well. There are also sports clubs and social clubs available to attend.

  • 9. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is amazing to work for and makes you feel appreciated in your job and with your work. Recognition is a big part of the company and it will help you get to wherever you want to get in life. The opportunities are there for everyone to do whatever they like and it is a company that you can be proud of.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • The interviews and assessments are a very clever way of deciding who gets a place. Whether you feel you did good or bad this is not a reflection on what the company are seeing and you are picked according to the skills they need. Once getting into the company then there are many opportunities to move into what department/area you like.
