  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently working on a support team for a platform team. I have helped develop and deploy the platform to a number of clients in the two years I have been in my role. My daily role involves interacting with clients, managing off-shore teams and looking after the platform services.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since joining my role I have earned a great amount of knowledge in many platforming devops tools. I have learnt how to write numerous programming languages such as Java, Ruby, Python, C++. I have also been heavily involved in using tools such as Terraform which allows me to build infrastructure as code and deploy multiple instances and services in cloud service providers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme very much and this is purely because of the team i am surrounded by. They are always willing to help me and promote my growth with any needs to desire. They have the patience to take me through certain tasks and break a problem down in ways for me to understand. I am treated just like a senior member of the team and there is no segregation because i am an apprentice.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Capgemini?
  • Capgemini are a great company to work for as they put so much emphasis into making their apprentices feel valued. They do not hold your hand in the work place you are just expected to do your role and be part of your team. The more you put into the company the one rewards you get through experience. Managers are always praising me for my fast growth and development.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The degree apprenticeship programme is structured very well as it allows you to connect the work you do at university with your day to day role. In the beginning of the course the induction is very in depth and allows you to build up a good foundation knowledge before heading into the work place. I also have regular meetings with support members so they can track my progress and make sure i am not falling behind with my work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider gives me a large amount of support if I need it. We are always pressed to engage with support staff or our lecturers to get the best out of the experience. With any problems we have there are always 24 hour support staff available to point me in the right direct should i need it. I could not ask for more from my university in the support they provide.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Working at Capgemini I receive a lot of support from many different entities. My team are my first go to for support but equally my manager is as approachable and willing to help should I need them. I also requested for a mentoring scheme to be put in place with a graduate of the same programme. This allowed me to raise any concerns about my degree or about the work place.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I believe my salary is fair for the costs I receive monthly. Capgemini is always willing to cover accomodation, travel costs and food. This is even the case when I attend on campus days at my university. The location of the office is a long commute from my home but I do believe my salary is sufficient enough to cover the cost of petrol.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of work there are many opportunities to attend company events and activities. There are numerous things to get involved in such as community events/sports events/ volunteering. These are great opportunities to get extra recognition at work and look good for your promotion case. I always try to get involved in at least one event a year.
