  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is Industrial engineer. My daily tasks range a great deal but the overall objective is to analyse processes and calculate times. I work in a team of 5 where we each get have been given an area of the track to monitor. Other projects iv been involved in include working with the electrical team to help solve electrical related issues.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a tremendous amount about the automotive industry during my time at jaguar Land Rover. Thanks to the practical side iv gained a lot of skills. However since transferring from a 6th form college to trident college id say my academic knowledge as decrease significantly.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy work and actively try get involved in as many projects as I can. Due to the nature of the department I work in the tasks that are set typically are very large and can be repetitive. As projects span over a few months it can become slightly boring. With respect to the college side of my apprenticeship I find myself constantly stressed and confused due the lack of organisation and teaching quality of my college.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • When in work I do feel valued. My manager sets me tasks which give me responsibility and allow me to stretch and challenges myself. I appreciate his confidence to allow me to go work on a range of projects independently with the knowledge I will complete the work to satisfactory standard.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Typically anything organised by the business is well structured and informative. For example our induction was well organised, a week long and packed full of information. On the other hand my college regularly has teaches late to lessons, has poorly written assignment briefs which have been changed last minute and known to make time table errors. There is definite lack of support from staff with studying.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • With regards to the college I feel apprentices are massively let down with a lack of support and many suffer due to staffs lack of interest. I regularly find myself in lessons with no lesson plan or the lecturer has been bought in last minute to supervise the class rather then teach. I feel the general attitude of most of my lecturers is that they don't care about my learning. I will say there are certain lecturers who I feel push student to achieve but this is against the general trend of the college.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My work manager is good at supporting me in learning my job role as an industrial engineer. He is very clear and good at explaining tasks and how they needed to be completed, which is reflected in my growth. I feel comfortable with going to my manager with any issues I have.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary given to apprentices is extremely good. It allows me to rent a properties shared with two other apprentices and lease a new car. In addition to this if i budget properly I can even put money into my savings.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of work Jaguar Land Rover support employees, including apprentices to develop themselves outside of work. They have a ELS fund which all employees can apply to. This is a £200 fund which can spent on developing any skill you like. There is also a deals of a lots of local discounted facilities such as gyms which i like to take advantage of.

  • 9. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Jaguar Land Rover to a friend because its an amazingly well paid apprenticeship which allows you to get your foot in the door for an excellent company. Its unfortunately that no-body challenges the poorly organised college and its demotivated staff but that is only two years. Its important to remember that 4 years after college are spent at Warwickshire university which has a very good representation.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • During the application process just be yourself and try stay calm. During interviews show your passion for job. I think the most important thing would be to say don't be demotivated iv the college isn't what you expect.
